windscreen wiper motor

Any advice please? Is the wiper motor on my 96 Chimaera 'borrowed' from anything in particular, or have I really got to pay £175 for a replacement from my nearest dealer?
(The motor actually runs, but the wipers do half a sweep then a nasty clunky/clicking sounds kicks in and the wipers won't move without manual assistance!)
Not sure that Rain X will get me through the winter!
Also, is access possible by via a lot of fiddling and foul language under the mesh grill?

Hi, when I first got my car, it had eaten 3 wiper motors in quick succession, Tower View in London cured the fault, discovering that a clip securing the motor had broken,causing the motor to flap about, and overloading it when in use. IIRC,they had to cut a little hole in the bulkhead to access. Since then,no problems.

The unit is NOT from the Truimph range, it is much heavier duty than those ....However.... it sounds like the internal rack has failed and we charge 14.43 for these (note...that if the motor is allowed to stop whilst still live then it will burn out and you will need the new motor.

Thanks also to the other gentleman... I've just returned following a 13 hour session and even I know it's not off a Spitfire!
(Any Hanley High Old Boy will know that Reginald Mitchell never put wipers on his baby) (private joke for any Stoke lads who went to that place!!)
