...for Debbies handbag.
It doesn't need to be the best(for her), but I would like it to bo pretty good in case I need to use it. Being a Canon man I'd like an Ixus, so which ones are good?
Martin.
PS - just bought a SonyEricsson K700i...pretty good photos!
If 'handbag size' = v. small there is a lot of choice around the £200 mark.
Casio Z57 is not bad, is small and has a nice large screen. No direct viewfinder though. Not tried viewing the screen in bright sunlight though - daughter's camera and she is protective of it. Don't expect much in the way of manual control.
I find the tiny Pentax S5i nice to use and convenient to carry (pocket not handbag of course!) but the later models lost the viewfinder to a large screen which is a shame.
No experience of the Canons except that talking to others and seeing examples, some seem to be excellent and other not so excellent - which is odd. I would quite like an S2 IS but it would fill a handbag (if I had one) and so may not be a wise suggestion. Also a couple of review sit seem to think the Sony H1 or a Lumix model might be better value on balance.
Ixus 55 - OUTSTANDING (or 50, just same with smaller screen).
V.Small, 5MP and 3x zoom, v. good Q pics and 30fps video at 640x480. Also has nice fast digicII processor, so make sure you get a nice Sandisk UltraII SD card for it.
In addition, also available is a 3m waterproof case - very handy.

I'm very happy with my Fuji E550, perhaps the newer F10 has the right blend of facilities for your intended user though ? review
The E550 is also quite sturdy. A coworker and I tried to break our F10 display model so it could be sent back defective, and it took a lot of drops, kicks, and cross-departmental passes before it finally gave up. The lens casing even became dislocated and looked bent to the side, but we could just pop it back into place and it worked perfectly. As I said, very sturdy camera...

Remind me never to buy a camera in your shop - or to employ you for that matter!
In our defense...
The way our store operates, we always have to sell the display model of a camera, regardless of how damaged it is from use. And since toward the end of a product's run, we operate on a very thin margin, a fair price for a display is either at or below store cost. And when there's still a little bit of margin on it, the camera lowers its own price every week as long as it's "open box". so eventually it goes quite a bit below cost. At any rate, since we don't want to write it off or lose $150 on the camera, some of us find it better for the store to send back the displays to the manufacturer as defective, since then we get back our full cost. And normally we can make up good enough reasons to send it back that the manufactuerer won't waste the time to check (like "inappropriate shutter lag" or "occasional oversaturation in direct sunlight"
, but if there's a fixable problem, they'll just fix the problem and send it back to the store, minus about half the accessories. So, either the problem has to be so obscure that they won't fix it, and instead just salvage parts, or damaged to the extent that the manufacturer will write it off. So I don't just get off breaking cameras
