st here in the departure lounge in th good ol usa reading road and trak and what do i see but a tiny piece (with admittedly poor photoshop pic) of proposed 2007 mas spyder.
article suggests car (or mule) has been seen tsting at fiorano - has folding hard top and running a v8....

intereting stuff - nothing to back it up of course though!

anyone heard any more on this topic?

Mr Tony....may I point you in the direction of the newly formed (I think) Italiaspeed forum?

www.italiaspeedforum.com/index.php?showtopic=21&st=60

You'll need to login to join the discussion, but it's well worth it. It would seem there are a couple of well placed sources that seem to have a lot of "insider" information. On the other hand they could just be trolls

Indeed it does appear that the V8 folding hardtop mules are out testing again. The latest pictures show a very well developed mule (checkout the door....it's almost a production finish to it. One photo shows a glimpse of the engine, and it certainly looks like the current V8). The photo location is the same as where the latest Ferrari F600 photos have been taken, so I'm guessing it's a building at Modena.

The latest issue of AutoExpress also has a "New cars for '06" booklet. In there, they claim the C/C version is due late next year. They also mention a "proper" (ie not a folding hardtop, and with 4 seats) coupe will be available. This is backed up by comments on the Italiaspeed site.

The "knowledge" listings in the back of Car magazine also quote that a V12 Q/porte is due next year.....now THAT engine would be great in the coupe version.

However, most magazine talk has been about the "cheap" Alfa Brera based C/C. See this link for details (only usefull if you speak German, but there is a good photoshop ) :

www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/news/auto_und_produkte/maserati_coup%C3%A9_cabrio_kommt_2008.93434.htm

It all seems a tad confusing. I can only hope both make production. The cheaper car will, hopefully, boost the Maserati coffers, meaning decent development funds in years to come.

(Also out of interest, the Italiaspeed forum and news section, indicates a top-line Alfa saloon (ie 166 replacement) will be produced, based on the next gen Q/porte).

BTW, How's the Aero 8 now? All fixed after the M25 incident, I hope

boing!

Have to wait and see on the 'cheaper' Maserati. Frankly I don't have anything against them doing this - if Maserati is going to pay its way as it must then I'd like to see it do so.

If the way to do that is to sell a few mid/high end cars arounf the cost of of M3 / Boxster S / Cayman territory then no problem from me. In fact I'll be one of the first in the queue to go drive one of the V6 cars.

If they can get it right in the traditional Maserati way, by blending fine performance with a luxurious interior then theres a good chance I'd be very tempted, and I'm sure a lot of others would be too.

OTMorgan is fine BTW - resting up in the garage as it doesn't like the crappy weather! (neither do I). Though the nest step for it possibly a little tuning - along with some chrome - time for the sports 'zorst, ally gearknob and wooden steering wheel upgrades I think.

Glad to hear the Morgan's ship-shape again

I agree, Maserati MUST start to make some money, and if that requires making cheaper cars, so be it (as long as they keep the Maserati spirit). However, I hope they also continue to develop high-end cars spun from the Q/porte underpinnings (ie with V8!).

I'm keeping me finger's crossed for the Detroit show in January. With any luck, the V8 car might be launched there (it wouldn't make sense to clash with the Ferrari F600 launch at Geneva in March!).
