How much do you tip?
Discussion
Just been to the hairdressers and got what was an OK haircut - I didn't think the service was that good - I paid for a senior and ending up with some kid who ddin't even bother to do the old 'look in the mirror to see the back' trick. I didn't tip her and when she offered me a loyalty card which I declined saying 'I really do think I'll be needing that' she got a right hump on.
Should I have pointed out why I didn't tip?
Why do people think they should automatically get a tip?
- now waiting for the missus to get home to check that I'm not missing a chunk of hair from the back!

I don't think people should automatically get tipped. Especially when the service was not up to standard. I would never expect someone to tip me, if they are happy with the cut etc.. & they give a tip then that's a bonus! But you should never expect it that's just rude.
But its like a lot of public services, waiters, porters etc..etc..

my barbers is £10 - they used to get £10 when it cost £9 and now they get £10 cos it costs £10!
i don't think anyone apart from the chef deserves a tip anywhere i go out to eat... apart from dear places and then you're already paying a lot!
i don't believe in tipping unless there isn't a service charge.

Obviously it depends upon location and degree of service.
If somebody has either really gone out of their way to provide a good service or is working their nuts/tits off as it is so busy. eg students working evenings in undermanned Frankie & Bennys.
Of course in USA a different matter and the incessant hand out there gets on my tits, but sadly a lot of these people are taxed on the basis they get 15% even if they don't.
What I do enjoy in the USA is refusing to tip when the service is especially bad. Like the cab driver from McCarran airport to the Strip on Las Vegas. Talk about a whinger, complained we didn't have luggage, complained that we were talking in Swedish, even took us to the wrong hotel / casino resort which I must admit was only 200 yds away from the right one but meant we had to cross the strip. His final complaint was when he didn't get a tip and came after us. I bet he's never had his doors slammed so hard before or after.

Tipping is something that’s done in America as a general rule and not here (Due to service staff earning so little in the U.S.), I would not tip unless service was absolutely incredible and the staff had went out of their way to see to it (I should point out that to date this has never happened).
Dirty habit really, what it says on the bill is what u should expect to pay.

I recently went to Vegas and the cab driver from the aiport threw our cases in the boot (sorry trunk) the only thing he said was "where to" We tried to talk to him and he blanked us and just mumbled to himself he then drove like a maniac including taking the speed bump at the hotel without slowing down then threw our bags out and then was pissed because I gave him $10 for a $9 fare. (If I had $9 in change thats all I would have given hiom but I did not fancy my chances in getting change off him the miserable git)
Where as the other taxi drivers we got they were all talkative and helpful so they were tipped.
Another thing a waitress told me was if you were ever unhappy with the service that you received still leave a tip but only a penny and that way they should get the hint.

Tip the haircutterist, what!
those thieving scrotes, they lay out nothing for stock in their workplace, continually increase the price, and for what?
As for grub, they get what the chippie does for preparing and delivering my order,
anyway i've travelled further to select it i'll wager pah!

I only tip if I think the service was worth tipping. Surely thats the point??
Last night for example.
Balti house in Brum, my friend got a plain nan when he ordered a Keema. I ordered a chicken Madras and got chicken Balti, and I had to ask 3 times for a jug of water.
So when it came to paying, I paid what it said on the bill, no more no less.
I understand that in USA its different, but I cant see me ever going there, so I'm not bothered.

I tip 10%. Always used to give hairdresser a tip too, until I started going to one where I usually spend best part of £100 for the full monty (colour, cut, bottle of potion). I stopped tipping taxi drivers about two years ago because they charge so bloody much these days. I was so impressed with the work of the guy who built my web site - and he was very cheap - that I gave him double what he billed me for
Edited to add that if I get bad service, I never tip. I usually complain instead. I once got drinks for all my party - about 14 of us - when me and friend waited an eternity for main course.

Cheers Guys - I think this tipping culture is getting out of hand
I think its just the tip of the iceberg

I only tend to tip in restaurants when paying cash as it can feel awkward waiting for change sometimes. If I pay on the card however, no tip.

I dont' feel at all awkward waiting for change at BP/shell and do'nt see why anyone should feel missgivings at the same in a restaraunt etc, we are a nation of;
"yes thank you the meal was very nice,
I especially like the dirty cutlery,
and the cold steak, was a nice touch hey, keep the change"
"leave it Richard he's not worth it"
PS Daniel, thats never going ot fit through that gate, sorry mate
