Helped needed for a networking novice!

Well, I managed to set up my wireless Netgear DG834GT using a wired connection from the PC and all works well.

Now I am trying to connect the laptop. The wireless adapter "sees" the router, as it shows down in the system tray "Connected to NETGEAR, signal EXCELLENT" etc. But I cant get access to the router directly or access to the internet?

Any ideas to help point me in the right direction?

If it helps I noticed that if I run winicfg it tells me the wireless adapter is set to IP: 192.168.2.4, Default Gateway: 192.168.2.1. The manual mentions that it should be in the region 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.63 or something, how can I change this?

chances are your router is in a different subnet to your pc. try going to command prompt (run cmd) and typing ipcongif /all and see if your IP address is within the same subnet (i.e. 192.168.2.x).

If it's not, goto network connections, double click on your wireless connection, support, repair and see if that helps.

Make sure your internet options are set to automatically discover settings within the lan tab as well mind...

If you have got the security bit disabled on the router it should work OK. You may have to go to the Netgear setup page on your laptop and router and configure the wireless settings, go to the SSID box, you need to type NETGEAR or make sure they are set the same on both the router and laptop, same goes for the channel settings.
To check the security settings go to security options lower down the same page and click on the "Disable" bullet.
When you get it all going and get used to it all you can then set some security options on router.
Hope that helps

The default, unless you have changed it should be http://192.168.0.1 for the administrative interface.

Cheers guys

AM getting there...

Laptop now connects wireless to the router and I can get the router settings page up now (changed default subnet to match).

But still no internet connection on the laptop, its connected to the router (which is accessing the internet now on the wired PC).

Any ideas?!

In internet explorer have you checked this:

Tools -> internet options -> connections -> Automatically detect settings should be ticked and nothing else.

docevi1 mentioned this earlier.

Can you ping a external address?, i.e pistonheads i.p.

FOund the command promt, ping requests time out.

Must be a problem with the laptop as the router is working for this PC, and the laptop can communicate with the router set-up but just cant get the net access

Are you running a software firewall?

If so, disable it and try pinging again...

Try this on the laptop

Start -> Control Panel -> network and internet connections -> network connections -> Right click on LAN (Local area connection) -> properties -> click on TCP/IP text -> properties and under the general tab do you have all setting pointing to automatic?.

Another test is to open the comand prompt and type IPCONFIG (Start -> Run -> CMD -> then type IPCONFIG).

Then once you have done this can you let us know what you can see.

Have you got a wireless adapter in the laptop or is it built in? If it's a PC card or USB adapter did you use the driver CD that came with it.

The wireless adapter is PCMIA. Its worked for the previous owner on their network so I know it works. Plus it finds the router set-up so its definatly in contact.

Just cant work out why it can "ping" from the router set-up page to the outside world (pistonheads ip address) but it cant access the internet in explorer.

Could any of the old network settings be effecting the internet access? I noticed in "Client for Microsoft Network Properties" that "Log onto Windows NT domanin" is ticked.

Any clues?

On the router set-up page it shows the following under "connected devices"
1 192.168.2.3 UNKNOWN
2 192.168.2.4 UNKNOWN

THe first is the desktop(wired), the second is the laptop(wireless), so this proves its connected....

I take it you have put your username and password into the ADSL config page so it can connect to the internet?

Not trying to teach grandma to suck eggs here just want to get rid of the obvious really.

Yep, connection works fine via the wired PC so the router must be set up OK in terms of ISP settings.
