Starting troubles (not usual problems)

I have been having having problems starting the car, randomly (hot and cold). The starter will not turn, although the fuel pump is priming (so not immobiliser).
3 times in the last 12 months the car has randomly not started then cured itself and been fine for a few months. More recently I have had a catalogue of issues:
I had symptoms of a dodgy alternator which I replaced, car was then fine for a week or so.
Then I had symptoms of a duff battery which was strange as it was only a year old, the main dealer replaced the battery then immediately diagnosed a dodgy starter motor which was also replaced. Car worked fine for a week.
Now installed a mod-wise hot start kit, car behaved for a day and now same old problems!
RAC-man has shorted the starter which engages so I am sure it's not that at fault again. I have had a look under the dash and fiddled with connectors in the hope it's just a poor connection but do not know where exactly to look or what goes on in the areas I can't access/see. Today for example in a 5 minute period, out of say 50 attempts to start it, it fired on 8 of those at random intervals. Now I am guessing the only area left that could be fault is something to do with the ignition wiring circuit, has anyone got any ideas where excatly I could look/what I should do??
I have lost all faith and patience in the car and would sell it if I knew it would start! If I can trace the problem then my faith in it may be restored.

I seem to have a similar problem. Except that my brother in law used a piece of wire to somehow start it. After it started I took it for a bit of a run as he thought the immobiliser may have been sticking as it has not been used for a few weeks.
However now I have tried to restart it and not even the fuel pump will prime (although it does start and then sounds so terrible at 500 rpm that I just turn it off). Any ideas?
