Got a strange on here - demon 2mb connection through an smc router.
When the router is powered down and up again (power cut, moving it or simple mistake) then the ADSL connection at night is awful. It thinks it is under attack (smurf/datagram etc), the router logs this and also the router seems to hang and freeze up so you can access it. You have to re-boot again. Some times you have to drop the ADSL connection in the router settings and then reconnect.

I have tried 2 other routers of exactly the same type, BT have checked the physical line, Demon have checked from their end. Very odd.

Do the ADSL lines have to recover at the exchange end or something?

There - a real odd one for you!

What model number is the router?
Mine (SMC7404WBRA) does something very similar. It will just lock up and the logs say Smurf or some other kind of attack. It usually happens in the evening - I work on it all day without probs.
I gather the general opinion is the older SMC routers can't fully cope with 2M speeds.

I generally just unplug for 10 secs and then let it reboot and it's fine. The kids are trained to do it now, too!

Thats the one! Yes it is and older one - I have updated the firmware but this makes no difference. All the other I have tried of this model are of similar vintage!

Right - now I know I will replace with a new one (refurb from justdeals on e-bay - had loads of stiff from them of the reconditioned netgear variety - very pleased with the wireless AP and the Music Player)

Thank you so much - it even helps that someone else has the same issue! This has been driving me absolutely nuts!!!
