underbonnet temp + Griff wanted
Discussion
Hi
I am just looking for a Grif, and have seen a nice 4.3, (with a sports exhaust). The underbonnet temp seems to be incrediible, after a run you can't hold the bonnet stay long enough to clip it in - although the water temp is as expected. Is this normal? Has anyone tried wrapping the exhaust in asbestos (or similar non lethal) heat shield stuff. Lots of competition cars do this. Sounds like a good idea?
I am interested in a fomula red 4.3, or similar, anyone out there?

Here's a funny story to give you an idea just how hot it gets under the bonnet of a 4.3
I couldn't work out why, suddenly, I was absolutely roasting in the car despite turning off the heating. I was convinced I'd got a problem with the heater motors (again) and had them all apart trying to figure out why I couldn't turn off the heat. Nothing, everything seemed to be working as it should.
I found it odd though that my passengers weren't complaining. I was sweating like a pig.
One day, bonnet up for pre-run checks.
It needed a bit of oil so I put a some in and was waiting to re-check the dipstick when I thought I'd use the time to have a dig around under the dash to see if I could see if a heater hose had come undone or something because the last time I was in the car I could see my trousers flapping about as if in a wind and the heat was unbearable.
I stuck my head down into the footwell and could see daylight through a 1" hole up by the pedals.
Thinks, Christ what now, have I kicked out a grommet or has something fallen off!
I rush back into the engine bay and there it is, large as bloody life, a dirty great big hole in the offside inner wing.
I'd removed the clutch reservior cover before it got towed into the garage to fix the failed clutch. I forgot all about it when I got the car back, and the cover was still off.
The hot air was rushing into the drivers footwell through the 1" hole in the bulkhead that is below the clutch reservoir inside the wing cavity.
Doh ! [slaps forehead]
One thing though, I won't be so bloody cold if the heaters aren't up to the job this winter. I'm going to take that cover off again !

I've wrapped the manifolds in exhaust wrap and have a section of fuel pipe covering the bonnet stay, where I hold it. It certainly does get hot, but shouldn't cause any issues.
Not a good idea to wrap the exhausts if the car lives outside though, as water runs down the inner wing onto the manifolds and will corrode them more quickly if the manifold wrap gets damp regularly.

I could make some "funny" remarks, however the exact same thing happened to me...... I could smell the odor of burning hairs coming from my leggs.

Yeah, what we could really do with is some sort of fan upgrade that brought the fans on half speed when you slow down and then full speed if necessary when you stop. But where on earth are we going to find anything like that?
Apparently if you e-mail this guy HERE I am more than sure he knows someone who has a gizmo to do just that job

Why on earth reduce the temperature under the bonnet? Its 20 minutes home from my nearest Kebab shop and with "Dennis's Xtra Large mixed" (with double Chillie sauce of course) tucked neatly behind the radiator I can enjoy it piping hot in comfort of my own arm chair.
Tried it with fish and chips but the paper caught fire!
