Hey everyone.
I am new to all this so bear with me. I am gonna make a life changing decision involving trevor cerb and want some advice from you. BTW it has to be a cerb as I have a 2yr old so need some back seats. I have c£20k to spend but actual amount is dependant on monthly payments rather than absolute amount
Anyway I need help as follows:
What is more important, age or mileage?
Where can you recommend for insurance, how much? (30 yrs old, no points (yet!!!!!) garaged etc)
which one Speed6/v8
Is the speed6 unreliable or is this an urban myth?
private/trade - will it be worth paying for trade to get warranty?
Where to get it serviced in Scotland (Lothians?)
Other s**t I need to know to get this through 'the credit committee' and to prevent me buying a dog.
Thanks for your held, and I'll stay in touch to let you know of progress

***Condition and history, forget age/mileage, a high miles car in superb condition with a full history will be better than a low mileage car thats not had faults ironed out.

***Suprisingly, Tesco for us...
which one Speed6/v8
*** V8, 4.5 if you want to mod it for more power, 4.2 for the better standard car.
Is the speed6 unreliable or is this an urban myth?
***See the "speed six engine" forum and decide for yourself.
private/trade - will it be worth paying for trade to get warranty?
***Depends very much so on the car, in the past our warrantee never really paid itself off, but others have been saved from a fair few big bills - difficult question.
Where to get it serviced in Scotland (Lothians?)
***havent the foggiest.
Other s**t I need to know to get this through 'the credit committee' and to prevent me buying a dog.
***Get someone to look over the car with you, there are a fair few specialist independants that will have a look at them with you.

I hear a can of worms being opened
Age or mileage. In my opinion, neither. Condition is what I went for and a feeling for how well looked after the car was. I bought privately so that was the best indicator for me. If it's trade sale then still neither. Condition again. It's warranted so things will be fixed for you depending on the warranty length.
Insurance, there's many specialists. I use MSM, £600something for 30yo, Full Proteced NCB, 0 points, Leeds postcode
S6/V8, Everybody has an opinion on this, try both to see what you prefer. I have/had a V8 and that suited me.
The rumours are true to an extent. There is/was a particular problem on the S6. The rumours seem to be that it is fixed now and if you buy one with a 2004 rebuild or later then you have a better chance with it. Do some research in the S6/Tuscan forum and there you will find your answers.
Servicing in Scotland, no idea.
Other stuff, buy wisely, use it lots, keep on top of niggles and it should hopefully serve you well. Use little, neglect it and it will turn around and take great pleasure in
you in the ass.For servicing in Scotland try Noel Flannery at V8 Sports and Classics - he may also be able to source a car for you too. That is how I got mine & I am very happy with it. Noel had looked after the car for 5 years so he knew it was a good 'un.
You can get him on 07980652447. He does not look after the six cylinder cars though.
As for insurance I am 37 and have a totally independant policy for the TVR with A Manning cost is £420 a year fully comp garaged with a 5k mile limit.

Cheers guys, I very much appreciate your input. This will be my first forray into the scarey world of a 'weekend car' so I am keen to get it right. Insurance looks like a potentially nice surprise, I pay the same for a 2.5 v6 DIESEL (AAARRRRGGGGHH) Audi, although many miles each year.
I am feeling better about this already. Also, where can I get the dimensions (or simply length and width) of the cerbie 'cos I need to measure my garage. Could be some work with a sledgehammer coming up if its needed!!!!
Cerbie, thanks for Neil's name. V8 are nearby me so I will definately get in contact and see what can be done re getting me sorted. Speed8, I'll look into the engine stuff and see what happens. To be honest I am erring on the side of a v8 anyway as my boss has a griff500 and he probably would laugh at me if I had less pots than him!!!!! Also I want to make LOTS of noise on a Sunday morning to wake up the BMW drivers in my sreeet!
