When i bought my S2, back in August, i was intending to store it in the garage during the winter, but i get the feeling from some comments on this site, that its not the way to go?
Doesn't storing it protect it from all the nasty elements ie rain, ice, snow and wind and keep it tip-top though? What i want to know is, does that not outweigh any 'potential'mechanical gripes you 'may' get from low usage of the car during winter. If i did store it, would it be okay to say, take it for a good drive every 2-3 weeks, to keep it on its toes?
I'm in a quandary, because my garage is quite difficult to get in and out of, so would like to keep the manouvreing down to a minimum during winter.
Whats the general consensus of you guys who have owned an S for a few years now?

From my experience the cars like/need to be driven. My MOT/main service take place in March. On two occasions the car has sat in the garage most of the winter, apart from a couple of outings, and on the other two winters was used regularly. The cost of my service after a low use winter were twice those of the heavy use. Now it may just have worked out that way, but generally the longer I leave the car between outings, the more niggles I tend to get. I have also used the car every day for the last 3 months and haven't had so much as a misfire. In fact the misfire I was having disappeared.

If you read the bible there is a chapter on laying the car up for the winter, but it does makes it difficult to take out for a drive if you do lay up.

Just drive the car regulalrly, but try and avoid those salty road days. Anyway you can't believe the buzz of a crisp fresh winter day blast with the roof off!!

My 2p.

I whole heartedly agree and I am certainly not going to an East Midlands TVRCC meet in an Astra!

Use it throughout the winter. Keep it clean, keep the chassis clean and then you will have a better car in the summer the next year for it.

Not being funny, but what's the best / most effective way of keeping the chassis clean?

Get it pressure washed and then waxoiled. Most specialists will do this, Tower View do mine every year. (It gets driven all year round.)

I had vision of the pressure washers "sripping" the waxoyl off...

Don't remember, not very much compared to the rest of the service, maybe fifty quid? (They use a thinned-down waxoil and apply it as a mist, apparently it goes on quite quickly.)

I use my S2 all year around but as its a second car it does sometimes go 2 weeks without being used. However I am a beleiver of using the car, My S is living proof.

It has loads of miles on it & it runs better than most of these so called 30,000 milers. They like to be used.

Just steer away from salty roads and get the chasis waxoyled..... I stripped mine back to metal by hand last winter, but it will last me 10 years without any more work now, just waxing.

The Waxoyl, not watered down.... they warm it up instead to liquify it. Cost me £70 to be done.

Cheers

When is the best time to get the car waxoyled ? i.e is it now or is it best in the summer ?

Sorry if this is a silly question.

I'm thinking summer would have been best, generally drier chassis and no cold fingers wanting to be put back into warm pockets before the job is done properly.

-to put a spanner in the works, I've heard that waxoyl can be detrimental to the chassis, with the rumour along the lines of the inventor refusing to use it on thier own motor......any opinions?
