How much power can a 5 litre take?

Hello again chaps, does anyone know how much power a 5 litre motor can dish out before it needs tweaking as far as the conrods/pistons or crankshaft are concerned. Also what is "crossbolting" in relation to the crank please? cheers bhpjon

Cross bolting refers to bolting through the side of the block into the main bearing caps to prevent them from moving sideways.

With turbo's it will make plenty of power on the stock rods so long as you use sensible rpm's.

I would like to know what kind of bhp or torque the standard set up on a 5 litre will take without the risk of it being destroyed when one puts one's toe down.So in answer to how long do i want it to last, as long as possible please. Incidentally how much extra power would a turbo add? thanks for your answers chaps. I am looking at remapping, multiple throttle plenum, racing leads and spark booster as well as a (possible) camshaft replacement

I don't know how serious you are bhpjon, but if you are then I suggest you talk to a few of the V8 tuning specialists to see what's on offer. I wouldn't expect to need to change the bottom end unless you're extending the rev range, in which case you're looking at major modifications throughout the engine. The popular tuning routes concentrate on increasing the volumetric efficiency of the engine without changing the rev range much, by modifying the induction system, heads and cam. I doubt the comment about turbos was serious, but if it was you are moving into a completely different ballpark in terms of cost, difficulty and potential gains.

I'd expect 500lb/ft and similar bhp from a blown rover and I'd change the pistons and rod bolts. Then I'd look for some very nicely ported b/v heads and a nice inlet assembly. I'd fit a turbo specced cam to suit the intended rpm's and application.
