Was searching around for some regs I wanted on the DVLA site, and noticed this up for future auction.

When you buy a plate and it doesn't have your initials they start asking you why you want it, I guess because if they think its of value they'll deny the sale and auction instead. I have a plate that spells "horny" in a foreign language, the operator at the DVLA asked me about why I wanted it, she was happy with my explanation.

i thought once they'd offered it for general sale, they had to follow through. Been looking for a few, but haven't found anything I wanted.

And they only seem to auction dateless plates now.
