he had the head skimmed post engine rebuild which has not helped apparently
any ideas if the tesco 99ron fuel is a)any good b)will it help
he has retarded the ignition to the point where power has dropped off noticably
and is looking into octane boosters as well as the higher ron fuels

It may simply be that it is a very high compression engine, in which case he simply needs to use high octane fuel. So he needs to find out the CR as a starting point.

Higher octane fuel will help, along with checking the afr is correct. He could run it slightly richer to aid knock resistance too.

Mine was pinking a few months ago - turned out to be low fuel pressure, caused by a faulty fuel pressure regulator (RV8). Weak spark as well.

A more drastic solution might be to talk with TVR Power / V8 developments
about thicker head gaskets / chamber the heads / new heads..

But I would go with all the other idea's first.

I`ve been using tesco`s in mine with no problems, can`t notice the diffwerence between that and optimax. Mine pinks on normal unleaded.

This needs an urgent fix to minimise damage whatever the cause, as you probably know already.

OK - I've been having a further think about this and believe
that I have a cheap and fairly eas solution.

Pinking is caused by the 'pre ignition' normally caused by the
valves running too hot.

What you need to do - is to ensure that they run cooler.

Firstly - DJE make a heat blocker that fits between the plenue
and inlet mainfold :
www.djev8.com/page18.html
Heat Block kit for OE manifold, blocks heat between manifold & trumpets, keeps airbox cool. 38mm or 45mm trumpets £60.00

Next - another over looked factor is that we can also make the engine run cooler :

Fit the coolest thermostat (water) that you can find : 75 degrees or cooler would be good.

This should go a long way to reducing your problems - if you are still getting problems when the engine bay is hot (hot engine, slow speeds) then lag the inlet hoses with tin foil - if this works purchase a more bespoke lagging.

Good luck.
