Hi, Im doing a track day in the 996 targa on monday at Goodwood.
Should I keep the tyre pressure as recommended in the manual and are there any other things specifically for the 911 I should consider.

I have done quite a few track days in Caterhams over the years but none in the 911, comments would be appreciated.

Thanks
James

36psi hot all round. With a car that heavy the tyres will get hot very quickly, so check pressure regularly.

hi,
Thanks for the reply. I should have started this way around by stating that the front are 36 and rear 44 cold. 18inch wheels which are the reccomended settings in the manual.

Hi superlightr.

The pressures you mention for the 2WD targa is the same pressures recommended in the manual for the 4WD turbo.

On a track day I would drop 2psi out of the tyres and see where the temperature was after a few laps. You want to achieve "operating temps" as stated in the manual.

PS - Enjoy Goodwood, a fast track, I think Iguana (Fountain of Porsche knowledge) may be there trying to cadge passenger laps. Not only is he a top bloke, he's capable of keeping his gob shut in the passenger seat, if you get my meaning.

Daz, I hope superlightr reads PH before monday, or if I see a fella in a 996 targa fiddling with his tyres at Goodwood and I say "Hi im Iguana, fancy giving me a ride" he will either think im a very foward and propositioning homosexual, or perhaps im insane and clearly delusional in introducing myself to strangers as a large type of lizard!!

Ref keeping my gob shut in cars, nah never, its always open in a Petr Solburg (Subaru WRC) style, it catches flys at speed, umm flys yum yum, Lizards like flys

Standard pressures are way too high -start at 36 hot all around and adjust DOWN to this during the day.

Have to agree with Merv,,,it is suprising how much you end up dropping the tyres particularly at a fast track such as Goodwood,,,always adjust hot,,,,but get the pressures back up before the drive home as at slower speeds the car would be unsafe at regular road speeds.

BTW, Pirelli advized me to run my Pirelli PO C's from 28psi cold, 32 psi hot. I find that when the back end (of the car!) gets squirrelly, the after session pressure has gone up by only 1-2psi. The next day, the COLD pressures are about 23-24psi. I'll put up a separate post from Pirelli, on slicks, but applies to all tyres, I feel.(When I can find it!)

ha ha just got back and read the posts - Iguana just propositioned me - !!! We had some very good sessons at Goodwood and went out on some flying laps with Iguana as a passenger, quiet and nervous sort of chap isnt he?? !!

It was great to see another PH and he gave some good pointers as we went round the track.

In the end left the pressuress as they were recommended in the book. The car did wave a bit under hard braking but boy the car is so nice to drive and very easy to feel whats happening. I left the PSM on and very unobrusive it was.

Very impressed by it. It did 'help' out just about 3 times but help is the word not cut in and only after i had overstepped and gone in a tad too fast.

Anyway excellent day, and great company with Iguana.

hope to see more PH next time.

Ps
Iguana can vouch for a 1min 15 sec time (cheque in the post.)

1min 15sec was as long as that, i thought you were under the 1 min barrier (double the cheque and I'll let ya have 59secs!!)

Car did feel fine on those pressures from the pas seat, it was however a cold day- track temp was probabally under 10degrees C so perhaps lower pressures in the summer a good idea tho. The rear did feel a bit squirmy round St Marys (i think thats what its called- big R hander B4 long straight) so it could be worth playing about a bit with the pressures to see how it affects the feel.

Impressed with te PSM it did let you have some fun before it cut in diddnt it anyway I enjoyed the blasting in the porker, the ferrari 355 & the Caterham (an SV so I can actually fit in one without a shoehorn at last hurrah!) mucho fun day in glorious winter sunshine. me now
