2p worth. I can't take photos, but I have the Canon. I find it great.
There follows a proper response from someone in the know............

From what I see in returns/service requests, Canons (and every other brand) are much more reliable than Casios.

I'd go Canon every time.

Canon know a thing or two about making cameras. Casio may be very good. But I'd rather go with the firm who know how to make a decent lens - this is the first thing that comes into contact with your raw material, so it needs to be as good as possible.

Canon make cameras and other imaging products. Casio make calculators and watches....

Go with the Canon - it's a fabulous camera.

If you are going travelling, get the Canon 3m waterproof cover (AW-DC50, about £100) - you then have yourself a virtually indestructible little travel camera.

The Casio's are supposed to be excellent, but I would get the Canon.

Buy them both from Argos and test them for a couple of days, then take the one you don't want back.

SWMBO found herself in the exact same position, with the exact same choice of cameras. Ultimately, we went for the Casio but you won't be disappointed with either one. We read some criticism of the durability of the Casio's lens mechanism, but the reviews of the picture quality, useability and the benefit of that big LCD screen swung it. Plenty of informative reviews on the web if you do a search...Good luck!

If it's a good lens you're after than how about the Leica lens of the Panasonic Lumix range?

Panasonic - nice glass, crap sensors

Of course the Lumix LX1 is in a class of its own - there's no denying that the Panasonic sensor is so noisy it would wake up the neighbors.

Thanks for the opinions guys. Seems the Canon is the firm favourite. TBH if its more sturdy than the Casio it may be the one to have to go travelling with.

Is the picture quality THAT much different between a Caonon 5MP and a Casio 7.2MPixel?
Also the optical/digital zoom are both the same, no nowt to choose from.

Selective and incorrect quote. I was thinking specifically of the FX8 and FX9.

The review on Luminous Landscape, and comments from users of this camera suggest otherwise. There is noise in the original images, but they apparently clean up very well in post-processing.

I was worried when I read the dpreview, but am happy enough now to have ordered the new Leica.

I think that dpreview can be a bit too sometimes, and doesn't really reflect how cameras are actually used.

Having used both these cameras extensively (mine being the Casio, the g/f's the Ixus 50) I can tell you that the Casio is head and shoulders above the Ixus. The build quality of the Canon is the only positive over the Casio IMO - and even then it's pretty close.

You have a lot more control with the Casio, and even with both cameras left on 'auto' the Casio still produces more pleasant photo's than the Canon.

If I can find a couple of photo's of the same scene using both cameras I'll try to post them up, it's doubful though.

Whichever route you take you'll end up with a great camera

I have just found an Ixus50 for 201 + 6.70 from Pixmania.co.uk so may go ahead and buy that.

I was going to buy it from 'Jessops' and have them 'Price match' it. It went exactly like this:

I phoned Jessops and asked them if they had said camera in stock. Girl said "Yes we do, its 259 pounds."
I asked if they can price match it, and she said "yes we can. It needs to be a company from this country and it needs to be in stock at the said price on that day."

So, I phone Pixmania and they Do have it in stock at 201 pounds inc VAT. Plus the 6.70 for delivery it come out at 207.70 in total.

So I phone back Jessops and when I tell the girl what I had just done all the legwork for her, and gave her the number for them (and website url) she said "let me just check that with my manager."

She comes back and says, "the best we can do it for is 225."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is that NOT a 'Price Match'?

There is merit in trying different branches of Jessops: We have 2 branches, 1/4 mile apart (at the most). When buying a Powershot A95 a couple of months ago, the larger branch refused to budge on their sticker price. The small branch price-matched an internet price that I thought they'd baulk at!

*I can categorically say Jessops DO NOT price match anymore.*

I phoned head office and they confirmed that not 10 minutes ago.

I think you can take it that this is the lowest possible price they can get it - in other words, near to what they've bought it in for.

Will have a look for a couple of photo's, but the earliest opportunity will be tonight. Sadly the g/f has leant her camera to her sister so can't take the easiest route...
