I have some 30 and 72 pin simms lying around. 256k up to a massive 4mb...

Complete with a 486 sx25 chip i'm sure the whole lot is worth at least 50 pence

Seems ridiculous when not 40 years ago GM had to rent a 1mb module from IBM because they couldnt afford the capital outlay...

It's not so long ago that memory was about 35 quid a meg. Happy days.

Er, I'm sure that renting the hardware out was the way IBM preferred to do business back then?

I've got bags full of 8MB SIMMS that I don't know what to do with; I keep finding them in peculiar places... socks, socks, underpants, socks, bag of SIMMS, more socks... Anyone want a gigabyte of 8MB SIMMS? It'd be kind of fun to make up an expansion card to fit them all in one computer, just for the crack...

SIMMs, SIMMs?

Ok, who remembers bending pins, trying to get Memory IC's into sockets?

Now, that was back in the day, when men were men!

Now you are talking, back to the days when I could understand what was going on!
Hmmm....Do you think it is worth upgrading from Win 3.1 to Win95?

2114 1k ram chips for your ZX81? or SIMMS remember SIPPS? the inline pinnned version?
Infact I am thinking about building a retro MK14 using a PIC chip (or 8031) as a SC/MP emulator.

I remember finding which one out of a bank had failed, using only a multimeter, then having fun trying to unsolder the dud one from the board...

Populating the motherboard. Now there is a memory (pun intended) . 2mb of RAM was "all anyone would ever need". hands up if you remember SCO Xenix as well (which is what said system was running).

Hey I was a SCO Xenix Backup Admin in those days working for Digital..WITH backup privileges lol! We used to backup to 1 1/4" tape on a reel to reel

The modern systems soon replaced the reel to reel with a new technology they called 'floppy disks'. These disks were made only by made by IBM when they were released and were tiny in size, measuring just 5 1/4", holding a massive 360k or their 'slightly' bigger brother which was an 8" disc holding a colossal 500k of data

Lots of grep commands and script writing, and that was just for backups. Also used to do a lot of hardware, and cut my teeth in SCSI /wide/raid etc. Also DEC / Digital systems and 10 Based T, Token ring etc.. and the kids today don't know they're born

GUI is for poofs - long live CL

I remember running a terminal from a 286 deskpro with concurrent DOS. Now that setup was fast.

My how we chortled when we discovered you could take a 5 1/4 disk to bits, punch another hole for the timing sensor, cut out another write protect tab, glue it all back together and voila two disks for the price of one!

I remember paying about £90 for a 512k upgrade for my Amiga 500, taking it to an astronomical 1 meg

Still a top machine though and I often dig it out for a bit of classic gaming!!!

Ah, those were the days. Remember having to "park" your fixed disks using the winchester park facility before powering down?
