Hi ya,

Popped into my local carpet right for some cheap carpet and the women there said you couldnt carpet over laminate.

Now call me a lazy so and so but i cant be bothered to have it all ripped up and then lay carpet. Would it really not work? Im talking staying in this house for another 2 years max by the way.

answers on a postcard please!!!!

Foam backed carpet is probably OK, or use a good foam underlay.

A hessian backed carpet laid straight on the laminate will not grip.

The downside of this is that the thickness of the floor obviously goes up, which means a step between different rooms, and somewhat odd-looking skirting boards where some appear bigger than others. I laid laminate over ceramic tiles and ended up with exactly these issues.

well we have laminate in a lounge through diner and just want carpet for the loungd and have a little silver runner thing seperating. Dont mind a little step or skirting looking odd as most of it will be covered up by sofas, tv's fireplace etc.

The carpet shop women said the laminate would buckle though....?

Dont forget the doors. When I had some really think underlay and deep carpet fitted I couldnt open the lounge door. Had to take the door off and cut 1/2 inch off the bottom if it

Laminate flooring expands and contracts, so do not nail carpet gripper through the laminate. Perhaps gluing the gripper down would be OK though.

I teared off the old carpet before putting in the laminate on our 1st floor . . . If you really want the floor to be even / horizontal / flat you better do so too.

Check the doors . . . the floor can get soo high with all these layers the doors won't close or have to be prepped . . .

Do expect some noise when walking on laminate with high heels or your tapdance shoes

She want to do the opposite ie put carpet on top of laminate.

Keep up at the back

When my parents got their place|www.dunvalanree.com the windows were always steaming up. We asked a few people why this would be, and we were told it could be because the carpets had been laid over laminate.

We had a look, and this was the case. Took up the carpets, took up the laminate, and the windows stopped steaming up all the time!

So I guess laying carpet over laminate leads to bad ventilation or something...

Yup, but check the doors . . . height won't change by laying vice-versa

I had carpet over wood, but never on top of laminate. Looks like a rotter to remove both after a few years . . . Are you glueing the carpet on the laminate?
