I've been a long time customer of a certain well known supplier of Region 1 DVD's.

Recently I had had my order for "Oliver!" cancelled by them with the reason given as follows - "Unfortunately there is a law in place which restricts importing American musical DVD's into the United Kingdom.". I've never heard of such a law - anyone know anything about it?

I have successfully imported DVDs such as The Sound of Music, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Moulin Rouge, Fiddler on the Roof, Rocky Horror, Evita ...) from the same company, but they decline to say why Oliver! is considered different?

BOLLOX!

I import dvds successfully from Canada www.dvdboxoffice.com and other companies. My dvd collection is 70% region 1.
F.A.C.T does not forbid importing region 1 DVDs for personal consumption, but does forbid retailers importing them and selling them in UK outlets, hence the regional coding.

There is a clear difference there , so if this company does not want your money , try someone else.

Hope this helps.

Private companies apply restrictions to prevent grey importing, they are not part of law.

It is the Federation Against Copyright Theft. It basically regulates and looks after the interests of the film industry , intellectual property etc...

It deals also with importing DVDs ,as DVDs in America are released earlier than Europe ,this affect sales revenue in cinemas here, hence the regional coding .

Basically the greedy film industry rather sees you go to the cinema and buy the dvd afterwards to fill their coffers. If you buy the dvd off the States of a film that's still in the cinema in the UK they don't like it , but can't do bugger all about it.
F.A.C.T says as long as you import them for personal use it's fine, as long as no UK company is selling region 1 DVDs it's not against the law , also every DVD needs to be passed by the BBFC for classification , but that does not affect personal imports.
On the other hand if F.A.C.T catch you copying region 1 DVDs and flogging them down the car boot sale then things will definitely go mammaries moonward for you and your nads will become their property.

You've been warned

if you cant get anywhere with Region 1 - try www.ezydvd.com.au/

Region 4 from Oz. They get their film and DVD releases at the same time normally as the US. Delivery tho can be between 3 days and 4 weeks.

Used to use them alot over the years - plus they are PAL too - think the conversion is £1 - £2.37

I've had this in the past, both with DVDs and with games (online games where they end up with tech support problems when someone who shouldn't gets hold of it). It's more likely it's the publisher putting pressure on the retailer to only supply to their defined market.

It's never happened from dvdboxoffice so I imagine this sort of practice is illegal in Canada.
