How much should it cost me to have a new soil stack installed, and old one removed obviously, and get a toilet replaced?

Also how much should it cost to dispose of my old asbestos stack?

Too difficult to quote without seeing it, but the removal and disposal of asbestos is expensive if done legally. Get hold of a soil pipe and fittings list from a local builders merchant and ask what discount they give. We get around 60-odd percent off some lists so make sure you get something. Aim for Polypipe if you can it is still cheaper than most. Have a total up of the bits and a stack's going to take half a day to put up, toilet the other half of the day, but I wouldn't like to guess how much to remove the old one. Estimate the day rate for the plumber and you have a rough idea......

Sorry if that's not much use.

Good question - I'm doing this too.

As a supplementary question, if I remove sinks, toilets, boilers, etc but still want to keep some things running for a while, do I just cap off the ends I've exposed? With, er, pipe caps?

I suspect pipe caps will blow off..

If you mean copper pipe, 'Fuffle, then 'Speedfit' push-fit caps are best. Just push them on and removethem by pulling the collett when you want to re-instate. Be a little careful that the pipe sizes are metric though.
If you are talking about wastes, tape them up with gaffa tape. Caps are not easy to do, you'd have to have a coupling and a plug...and sizes can be a bit awkward...and the material the pipe's made of.

What, if you don't mind me asking Ferg, is the day rate for a plumber?

ETA, Council are asking £100 minimum to take away the old pipe. Bugger. My shed is asbestos as well.....won't be getting a new shed then!

Gorblimey, I really am going to destroy the place this weekend amn't I?I'll be trapped under a pile of rubble, when the pipe caps will blow and the water level will start rising up to my chin. And that's when the ceiling will collapse.

Still, less scary than getting a man in But only cos nerv offered to lend a hand

It varies dependent on customers and the plumber involved, but around £150.....?

Speedfit caps are great. They have little stainless steel barbs that dig into the copper. The more pressure, the more they bite. You can re-use them again and again too!!

If the old pipe is asbestos take real care taking it apart. I assume it is external? You will need to wear a good quality face mask as a minimum. You don't want to damage it as it is the spores from it that are dangerous!

If you even suspect it's asbestos then DO NOT touch it.

It needs a specialist firm to take it out and it can only be disposed of at a licensed waste dump, not at the local council tip.

Never take chances with asbestos, a face mask is nowhere near sufficient protection.

Because the existing one leaks, or leaked, and I was facing an imminent Richard (the third) problem... I had a plumber around today who destroyed it for me.

I now have an asbestos "situation"
