Sealing front light clusters
Discussion
I want to be able to:
1) Replace the cover quickly if damaged
2) Attach the weatherstrip to the car and then bolt the cover on quickly. I already have ten attachment points through the cover as recomended by the manual.
It is an option for attching the light covers and side windows discussed in the assembly manual. In Monterey two years ago there was a GTR that had only bonded the covers on, one was loose and the cluster was clouded. If needed I can later bond the cover on but would like to try this first.

Ken,
All the GTR's seem to have bonded in covers. Bonding in the cover is a fairly permanent affair. At first thought, I would probably use a uerathane compound like you will use for the windshield installation. I picked some up at a local windshield replacement shop. Strong stuff! Also, apply it in a well ventilated area. It will be a real pain to remove. The only way your getting it off is with some piano wire. With a painted surface, it would just lift the paint off, but you've got gelcoat and its not going to do that. You might ask Ted what they do when they damage a cover. Maybe you can slide a thin bent razor blade inbetween there? Will you paint the inside edge with black? Sorry, mine are bolted into place with button head cap screws and rivnuts. Wish I could offer some real advice.
Cheers!

Surely one of the main ideas of a forum is to stimulate debate from an initial question or statement, regardless of how intelligent or inconsequential it may seem.
Some of the best strings on this excellent site have arisen from quite mundane questions.

Was not ( Why ) a question in it's self ?? Mr Wright
has a good replie to it as well.
Ken. My headlight covers are attached to the bodywork with M5 rivnuts and S/S button headed screws with nylon washers. I ran a continuous bead of silicone sealant in the "corner" of the headlight recess immediately before fixing the perspex covers in place. This has made a watertight seal. The covers are easy to remove as the sealant is not strongly adhesive and you can "roll" it off with your finger if you ever have to take the covers off. You will, of course, need to re-seal the covers every time you take them off.
I can't see how bolting on the headlamp covers can possibly contravene the SVA regs if you use button headed screws. This particular point was raised by GTRCLIVE a few days ago after apparently discussing it with the factory. However, when I mentioned the same point to Ted, he couldn't see why there should be a problem. Clearly, some confusion here.
