993 turbo 4 - downhill ever since?
Discussion
just perusing page 1 of todays Pistonheads 911 classifieds where there are two 993 turbo 4s, one arena red and the other midnight blue. without either wishing to provoke a scrap/slanging match or to offend my 911 water-cooled brethren , am I alone in thinking that the 993 turbo 4 has to be the most fundamentally beautiful 911 ever?
For what it's worth coming from a 993tt owner, I agree with you. While I respect the reported superiority of the 996tt in terms of power and control, and like it's keinenonsensewagen looks, it is not as aesthetically superlative to look at as the older model.
It's the whole package - the cute little spoiler, the raked headlights, the sexy fat ass. Alright, compromised by age it may be far from ergonomic bliss inside and it doesn't have all the toys, but I really don't need all that stuff. Ultimately it's a hard car to replace which is why I intend to keep mine....

Love em especialy with the s vent but prefering the 993 RSR look.
965's do it for me as do 964 obviously
996GT3's mkII and RS's
but you know what, people will think this is really odd. Where I work there are loads of 997's floating around and I really, really like them. black ,silver, red they just look so nice retro but sleek and modern at teh same time
I realise I'm in a minority of me on that last one

Well I agree that the 993 is the most beautiful, but I don't like the "melted cheese" of the Turbo ( I'm a turbo owner myself). However the GT2-esque kit of the big spoiler pack makes it OK
Again, I know the 996 tt is a much superior car, but I'll often find 996/997 owners citing functional benefits of how much better the wasserpumpers are and/or how dated the 993 is. "dated" is to do with fashion, and fashion doesn't interest me. Well if you can't appreciate the SUBTLE virtues of the 993 over the 996s now, you probably never will...

see where youre comin from, LA, personally I'm not a fan of whale tails. to me it looked clumpy on the really early 911s (though I liked the old ducktail), the 964 turbo was much better integrated aesthetically, buti think the 9943 turbo is the only one where the integration works really well, giving it a purposeful rather than ott look. horses for courses.
Until I went to the Porsche Club Festival at Brands Hatch this year, I didn't know whether to buy a new 997 or one of the last 993s.
From the moment I saw the rows of 911s in silver and red, I had no doubt my next car was going to be a 993.
However much I rationalize my decision with factors like interior equipment, handling or residuals the decision was purely aesthetic.
Of all the 993s I like the RS with the small spoiler best, strangely enough thats what I bought!
BUT.... Of all the Porsches ever built I like the looks of the short tailed 917 race cars best of all.
