Hi

I start my Jury service tomorrow and the leaflet says dress code of "smart casual". Obviously this means diferent things to different people!

Anyone attended Jury service recently and if so how were people dressed.
I could wear work suit minus the tie but dont want to be OTT if everyone else is in jeans.... Probably have some trousers somewhere but as I am suited and booted all week tend to live in my jeans the rest of the time....... complete pain in the a**e IMHO

thanks

It's not a fashion show. You don't need a suit or tie, but jeans are not IMHO smart casual.

What about jeans, dark suit style jacket then a plain t shirt or open neck shirt?

Smart/Casual

This is a difficult but important category, as it is widely worn today at many events. It has to look presentable, but not too formal. The pivotal garment for men is a blazer or other sports jacket. It is adaptable and versatile and can be worn with flannels, shirt and tie at one end of the spectrum, or in the more relaxed idiom of cotton trousers, polo shirt and sweater. With it a man would wear brown shoes. Casual looking linen or cotton suits can also look good. Panama hats make ideal accessories on hot days. Trainers do not.

Taken from Debretts guide to etiquette and modern manners.

Thats probably about as official a line as you'll get

Basically don't get found in contempt of court.

Alternatively wear a t-shirt with some kind of offensive slogan and you may be asked to return home

Ive done jury service, some people wore jeans, some suits. Wear what you feel comfy in, but avoid jeans, trainers and t shirt combo. I wore a skirt and top, though I advise against that unless you want funny looks

As you walk into the court room just say Hi to one of the judges, that'll get you out of it

Shooting jacket, jodphurs or plus fours, brown brogues. A monocle would also help. So would carrying a folded "Frauniad" under your arm.

You'll be home by lunch time.

so by the sounds of things as I have a couple of casual suits, and a couple of plain work suits...... these with just a shirt should be fine.

Doesn't take much thinking about in the morning either

2 weeks?

Friend of mine ended up on a "corporate manslaughter" jury - 9 months!

runs and reads the small print.............

apparently if the case is longer than two weeks you get the opportunity to state reasons why you can't do it.... my job is sales so i would be stuffed at work..... but the judge has the final decision apparently....

hoping that it is just the two weeks...

And don't be late either, my husband was on jury service, and a woman was late back. The judge asked why, and she answered she had been shopping and lost track of time. He asked her if she had bought anything nice, to which she replied 'a coat'. So he promptly found her in contempt and fined her the cost of the coat.

Can't remember what he wore though, think he must have bought some trousers.

Call Prince Harry and ask to borrow his Nazi outfit.

They'll have you out of there faster than Michael Jackson being booted out of The Early Learning Centre

I've heard this story. The judge said 'wasn't such a bargain was it?'

Trousers and a shirt. Jeans ok if smart, depends what you feel comfortable with. If your experience is anything like mine you will spend 2 days sat around only for the er to plead guity at the last minute!

I was in court earlier today and no jury member was really "smart"

Probably casual shirt and smart jeans, or suit if you don't want to be chosen

I've known a couple of people who have done Jury service. They were both finished and done within a week, not the two that they expected.
