wet footwells?

Ive been to see a few cerbs now, and saw one last night im considering buying after a 2nd viewing on sat (during the daylight!). It was in very good condition underneath and the chassis looked mint to be fair! only gripe is the footwells were wet. I know this is quite common on the cerbs, is it common knowledge that its just coming in through the crap door seals? They were the std type seals that made a lot of wind noise when going over 80mph....
Carpets smelt damp, well the interior did...and they had white mould on parts!
Also has anyone ever got any quotes for a leather re-trim? as this one only had half leather and the vinyl black dash wasnt too appealing!

I had a set of carpets made for my car for under £200. The guy said he would retrim the seats and dash but was unsure of the time envolved. He said go on £1k for full leather retrim with carpet. He had only done Griff's and Chim's.
As for damp, my car had a really bad leak from around the master cyliner. It took me ages to find and a couple of goes at trying to fix. Its all done now and the TVR smell is coming back, helped by the new carpets.
I understand that there is a door seal upgrade that was carried out on earlier cars. May be that one didnt get done?

Mines sprung another leak last week & the carpets went damp / smelly / white, but the valeter sorted it out.
I'ts still leaking, so It's going back in again next week (rear foot well behind the driver), I think it's running down the channel where the emergency pull is, & collecting at the back, as I park up hll.
Ho hum, don't let a leak put you off, what about the rest of the car ?

You will be supprised where the water gets to. Check to see if its coming down the master cylinder servo. It can them work its way backwards using the channels in the body.

Nah, that's too easy, I had that leak fixed & re sealed last week
I've got another one, I'm thinking of letting a firework off inside & seeing how many place's the smoke eminates from

Never had a leak in mine.
To be honest if the carpets were white with mould and it smelt of damp then personally I would walk away. I don't see any reason for any car to have leaks. If it does then they could at least have had it cleaned before I come and look so I didn't notice.

Or do a negative pressure test! They did do this on Aircraft fuel tank. Put a guy in a fuel tak seal him in and then suck out all the air! Where the air is rushing, thats your leak!

Never had wet footwell in mine - it shouldn't leak if it's been cared for. From your description it doesn't sound like a recent problem. I would ask myself why the current owner hadn't been able (or bothered) to sort this out during his/her ownership. Personally I'd walk away - there are plenty of others around to choose from.
To be honest im not really fussed about a water leak as mine will be in my garage on the wet days as itll be a 2nd car. Apart from this and the fact that it badly needed a wash inside and out (his 2nd car had broken on him so he is using the cerb atm to get to work and back - in london! for the past 2 weeks)it looked like a well cared for and decent condition cerb! It needs 2 new front tyres, the rev counter didnt work, bleeper didnt work (but may have been turned off), and hasnt got ac- but then how often is that needed in this country!
Its one of the earliest models '96 N plate with the clatter cams still. The carpets werent sitting in a pool of water, just damp/wettish. Its not something that woulod put me off on a hand built car like the cerb, after all, i used to work for volvo cars uk, and brand spanking new v/s50's were having probs with the air con drain pipe leaking in the footwells, which left water about 5inches deep in the back!lol!
oh, and i once owned a mini! says it all! lol!

I had to fit them! Just had hime make them up. Took a day to do.
Would still like to know who it was that made them for you, quite happy to fit them myself or find somone slightly more qualified! Any info would be warmly recieved!

Careful there lad, could rub a few people up the wrong way saying that people with water leaks are bad owners. Sometime they are impossible to find.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply that! Used to own a couple of MGB's many years ago and these sufferred from difficult to find water leaks. Point is I worked on it and sorted it out until eventually the leaks were no more - when buying cars I have looked for evidence that previous owners have done the same and not neglected problems.
