I was a politics student and have often excersised my constituent right to thoroughly annoy my local Labour politician, but I would never join the political fray as it were, there is often no future in it and the stress levels are very high. I just let someone else do it and use them to voice my views which, before anyone says, has actually happend.
Combover
I joined the Conservative party a while back and have given them financial contributions in addition to my membership fee.
When I buy a house and move to an area that has the slightest chance of electing a Conservative MP/Council then I intend to get more involved in my local Conservative association.

A desire for public office should immediately preclude you from ever holding it.
I've been thinking about getting a bit more active, but I don't really know how to go about it. I don't really want to join any particular party, but I'd like to make whichever people can influence things aware of some of my views. Anyone got any tips on where to start/who to start on/how to go about it?

I attend strategy meetings for the Conservative party regionally and nationally and run local media campaigns for Conservative candidates at election time. I've also been shortlisted for a seat on the local council.
please make sure david davis doesnt get in then.
I find him a bit left wing for my taste too.

Sadly, every indication that I have seen so far sugests that grass roots will go for Davis above Cameron.

Doomed if they do and doomed if they dont Mon Ami. Either way we need a new party.
The more I see and hear of Cameron the more I think he's just a slick willy who will appeal to Tory ladies but will be a turn off to the masses.

I think the choice is quite simple really - Cameron has been groomed for the role - he's the bright young thing, media friendly, charismatic (whatever that really means) and liberal in his approach. The party sees him as somebody who may appeal to the man in the street by taking on and beating Blair at his own game.
Davis is a man of conviction, whose instincts are without doubt Thatcherite. He is an old-style Conservative - a politician first and foremost, who has been buffed up to make him look as appealing to the masses as possible.
I personally think that Davis is a more genuine and reputable politician than Cameron, but I think we need to elect Cameron if we are to go forward. A lot of party members have reached a similar conclusion.
However, the grass roots are likely to go for the devil they know...

I disagree. I think he is far less a "man of the people" than Blair was and I think his appeal will be far less broad. Also I think the public has tired of the slick spinmeister approach and would prefer a straight talker. Clarke C2001 was the way to have gone. Old Etonian spin meister C2005 is not. (IMO). I think in retrospect that Davis might actually have a better chance.
