Faster, Faster, Faster
Discussion
Following Rodent damage and decisions to made about interior I'm now undecided now about the seats, might not bother retrimming might get lighter ones and strip the interior. I know it appears strange but I've really got the urge to make his car a bit special.
Basically more power, less weight and better handling.
So far I've fitted K+N (yawn, I know but sounds great) strut Brace and short shift kit.
Car is a 1986 3.2 Carrera Targa. 83,000 miles very solid, maintained by a guy I really rate (Martin Brown @ Porschetech) for the last 30k.
Suggestions welcome for performance enhancement, all welcome from mild tweaks to outrageous ideas.
As a starting point let's say I want this car to be modded so that it becomes close to a 964RS behaviour. I've owned one, I can't afford one now and I would like this Targa to be the fastest of it's kind but still look underrated.

- pair of recaros (these impede rear seat access though)
- full suspension kit and geometry; maybe an H&R kit
- set of cup wheels and mirrors
- uprated front brakes, not sure what fits on... maybe some big blacks?
- C2 or polyurethane bumper kit... lots of weight in the bellows bumpers which could be ditched
- lightweight door cards (cheap)
- half cage and harnesses
Speak to tony.t as he has modded his C2 to a 964RS-esque spec.
To be honest, not sure I'd bother. The Targa is a bit compromised in terms of rigidity and it may look odd turning it into a trackslaaaag. Best bet is probably to sell up and invest another 10k, rather than spend almost that amount playing with your existing car. Tuning will soon spiral and as soon as you reach for the carbon fibre doors catalogue and lexan windows price list you'll know you've gone too far
PS Like your intentions tho'

Hmm probably right, rear seat access no issue, rigidity is not as bad as you'd think, I really don't want it to look too different just surprise people. Cups, not so keen (unless mag) one thing I have been recommended is to fit spacers on rears, makes significant difference to handling, or fit 3.3 Turbo Rear Fuchs.
Without fundamentaly ruining car, I guessed take out rear seats ,change front seats (Recaro or equivalent), remove door buckets, ditch spare wheel, rear linings, Carpet all round.
That way I figured I could put it all back to resell when I trade up for an RS!!
Engine wise superchips +12bhp? Not so sure do these really work?

I am not sure about stripping out carpet/rear seats... quickly looks very industrial and real bind to re-install. Not much performance benefit.
Maybe just do the seats, turbo fuchs, decent suspension and get a remap/exhaust. It would sound fruitier at least. There is a lot of weight in them there bumpers; if you want to do it properly you will have to think of the C2 look. Mag cups save a lot of weight as well - at a price ;-)
PS Is it a G50 box? A 3.2 with a G50 is a great car; not so fond of stirring the porride 915wise.

The targa has a much stiffer windsheild frame so if you weld a roof on it the whole shell is stiffer than a coupe. Not many people know that
Best bet for performance is to fit a 993 engine, ask 9M, makes for quite a quick car because the 3.2 shell is a fair bit lighter anyway. Don't know a great deal about tuning 3.2 engines TBH but for a track car more power is usually well down the list
For track/road use I'd go with the suspension upgrade, and the H+R kit I had on my C2 was a great comprimise, and I would recomend their products. Coupled with that decent tyres such as MPSCs or Dunlop DO1Js will make a dramatic difference.
As for shedding weight the seats are a good start because the electric ones weigh about 3 stone each and recaros weigh about a 1/3 of that. In my experience you really notice weight loss, but once you start on CF it does get a bit expensive although replacing the doors hood and tail/lid does save a fair bit of weight. Stripping the interior sound proofing and carpets and rear seats saves more weight than you might think but without them there is a dramatic loss of refinement. A lightweight carpet improves things considerably though

As it's 86 it is the 915, short shift kit has made great improvement, it is also a bit more robust than G50 (so I'm reliably informed) so it allows for my slightly agricultural driving style.
Thanks for all your advice and suggestions guys, you're quite right if you get too stupid you end up with a money pit for not much extra performance. Decided on remap, exhaust, seats, turbo fuchs and probably leave the interior apart from wheel which is really showing its age anyway, I won't have the car forever so the hassle of refitting carpets panel etc.. doesn't seem worth it.
Aim to get this done before xmas as a birthday and xmas present to myself, should then be one of the quickest 3.2s around without looking like a track slag and will still surprise a few people who think a 20 year old car is going to be slow. Best of all a big grin on my face every day when I fire it up and use it.
Can already smell the barbeques at Le Mans, with the lid off and the right foot down......................
Should keep me going through the winter.
Thanks Again
No probs.
I'm sure the short shift helps the 915 immeasurably. 86' was the changeover year in germany for the g50 if I remember, hence my curiousity.
Take it to the 'ring at some point, too. I drove a 188bhp SC at the ring recently and it was great fun; although the wider fuchs on the front kept fouling the arches, so remember to get the rolled.

Hi fugatso,
In what respect has the short shift kit impoved the gear selection? I guess you will now have some spring loaded definition seperating the 1st/2nd gate from the 3rd/4th gate but does it let you select a gear any quicker now and with more confidence? Had contemplated putting one on mine but have just got used to a steady (make sure it is going into 3rd and not 1st
from 5th) change now. regards.
