Just taken ages to go over and back across Wandsworth Bridge - here's why ...

Scamera van on the south side of the bridge - in the bus lane - with another van - and a cop car - a couple of coppers milling around.

About 40 yards up - on the bridge itself - another 10 coppers standing around doing bugger all. A couple more police vehicles - including a large van parked in the left lane forcing all the traffic (and there's lots of it) into the remaining lane.

They appear to be looking for expired tax discs!

The congestion they're causing is considerable - and that scamera sure as hell ain't gonna catch anyone for speeding!

Does anyone "in the know" have any idea WTF they're playing at - not fighting international terrorism, that's for sure

It's called ANPR - plenty of previous threads on the topic.

The camera van probably isn't looking for speeding traffic but is identifying the numberplates digitally and then searching the out of date DVLA databases for illegal acts.

Expect to get pulled over

Seen em doing this on Bermondsey high street earlier this year.. technically this is SE London. True never seen this north of the river in proper East London though.

To be honest the traffic in east london is in such a state they could send someone to walk down the huge queue of traffic and manually check all the tax discs due to lack of east bound limehouse link tunnel still!
Oh yer and the idiots that decided to do road works on Bermondsey high street going westbound towards tower bridge this week need to be shot given how bad the traffic is in general around the A13/Rotherhythe tunnel should get a slap.

Good on em, bit of pain for a few weeks to get rid of all the scum with out Tax and insurance will make a lot less traffic in the long run - I'd be happy for a few weeks to send out the message that they cant get away with it any longer, should end up with Lower insurance premiums and Tax eventually - Petrol might go up though

The ANPR guys were setting up on the northboad A23 outside Streatham Station on Tuesday. Usually they set up Southbound but lots of people used to nip through the one way system to avoid them. Not so easy to do going North. I wish I had stayed to watch the fun, if it's like any other thime they set up there, they would have had a field day!

I notice that East London hasnt got one!!!!! You would need 5 there just to keep up with the amount of 'dodgy motors' I've seen.

same in S & SW, I would be surprised if more than 75% of the people who own cars on my road were licensed.

That’s where you’re wrong ! ANPR has at least 20 plus different databases depending on what’s on the system at the day in question. One of which is Anti-terrorist branch. ANPR is not just for Tax discs and motoring offences. It covers a wide variety of different intelligence from all over the country.

Go and Murder someone in Newcastle, your car is put up as suspect, next time that car comes in sniffing distance of ANPR car / van etc, gotcha !!

As for not working in other areas, there are five dedicated ANPR vans and teams within London (SW,NW,SE,NE and Central), also every traffic car in the Met now has it fitted, cameras front and rear.

Lambo gave us a great demonstration on Saturday of the ANPR and other databases, very enjoyable, quite a few Tunnelers were squirming though and giving over dodgy numberplates

Now that is interesting, what that means is the ANPR has broken and we are playing Intelligence led policing. You all have different colour sticks, what ever colour comes out first is the colour of the next car to be stopped !!!!

Isnt that a bit like the old game of snooker that BiB used to play, hence why Ive never had a red car!!!

You sure? Safe Speed issued the following PR on Tuesday:

PR254: ANPR and uninsured driving claims are just plain wrong

news: for immediate release

Uninsured driving is a serious problem, but Automatic Number Plate Recognition
(ANPR) won't fix it says Safe Speed.

ANPR is a system that uses a video camera looking at vehicles to 'capture'
number plates. The registration mark is then compared electronically with
various databases of vehicles that the Police may be interested in.

Government claims that ANPR can be effective against uninsured drivers do not
bear scrutiny, and for very simple reasons:

* It's not the VEHICLE that needs insurance under the law, it's the DRIVER.

* About 3 million motor vehicles are 'in the trade' at any one time. Most of
them will be properly insured, but none of them will be listed as insured in
the databases.

* At least 1.5 million vehicles are in large fleets and are not insured based
on vehicle registration mark. They aren't in the databases either.

* It's far from unusual to have a vehicle that is registered as insured being
driven by a driver who has no insurance to drive in force. ANPR thinks the
insurance is OK, but it isn't.

* Even with a massive police effort it is virtually inconceivable that they
will reach 250,000 prosecutions in a year. With two million uninsured drivers
that means that the average uninsured driver should expect to get caught just
once every EIGHT years.

* ANPR can be defeated by stealing or cloning vehicle registration marks.
Widespread use of ANPR will make this practice commonplace and threatens to
undermine the entire registration process. Reports suggest that 10% of
vehicles are already lost to the system.

* Police officers have already reported so many false positives with ANPR,
that they simply turn the equipment off. (reported in Auto Express)

* Vehicle seizures will encourage the use of 'disposable' vehicles. The Police
crush a £100 banger, and the uninsured driver simply buys another. He's back
on the road in a week.

Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign
(www.safespeed.org.uk) said: "Estimates of the number of uninsured drivers on
our roads range up to 2 million. By any standards it's a serious problem. But
serious problems require serious solutions. Current plans are a bad joke."

"The uninsured driver problem is considerably worsened by this government's
anti-car and anti-motorist policies; more and more motorists are finding that
they are simply better off outside the law."
