Wavering - please convince me!

Well after many years of wanting one I'm finally in a position to get that 911 C2 I've always lusted after.
Found the car I want, a lovely 996 3.6 C2 with bits, but now it comes down to the crunch I am having trouble crow barring the requisite £40k from my bank account. Funny isn't it when you actually have the money how difficult it is to let go of it!!
So come on guys, convince me I'm doing the right thing here rather than being "sensible" and actually investing most of that money in an appreciating asset (not that I can't afford it, I'm just tight!!) and getting an Elise again for my "fix". (Just got rid of an M3, got bored of it!)

Do it - you could be squished flat under a bus tomorrow and that £40k will do you no good at all.
Maybe your partner is not an issue in this decision, but my tactic was to say to my wife (in the throes of my mid-life crisis), "Honey, I'm either going to get a mistress or a sportscar, what do you think?". Since then, apart from snidey comments about the cost of a set of boots for the car, she's taken it very well!

just to stimulate debate, what would you have done if her response had been "sure honey, but if you get a sportscar then I'll get a lover"?

In that case I would have felt justified in getting a sportscar AND a mistress!
With respect to comments on cost of boots, I gave her permission to go out and get herself a pair of boots too. She pushed for 2 pairs like the porker but capitulated when I said we'd have to cancel the winter sun holiday in that case....I'm such a bastard sometimes!
But when I started the process of getting a sportscar, I declared a budget of about £15k for an old car. After much research on what make to go for, then what model porker to go for, I decided that a 993tt had to be mine and splashed out £40k instead.
Another factor in the argument jimbo is that the money isn't gone forever. Sure, the car will depreciate and there are running costs (as there would be for any car you bought), but you should be able to enjoy the car for a while and get at least half your money or more back when you sell it.
if you don't buy a porsche, you'll end up buying a ferrari and then your soul will be lost forever and in a thick fog of inferior build quailty, poor mechanics & reliability and worst of all f-chat forum arguements. you will also be under the bizarre and misguided pretence that you actually own a better car too!!!

If you have a 911 itch it is well worth a scratch...

aaagh, mpv, dont go there! argue very strongly that the rear seats in a 993 are perfectly adequate for children up to 10 (as are those in the 944/968) and that any potential whingeing will be immediately transformed into grinning by application of R foot pressure. You could also add an extra argument that keeping small children in rear seats close to engine will keep them extra warm

The seats are fine, its finding space for all the other STUFF! Which grows like topsy.

Funny, my Mrs also had the "absolute urge" to stab me in the early-ish days of pregnancy (note "stab" not "kill"..difference?...I dont think so!)...she's now 7mnths and I presume no longer feeling the urge (I tend not to bring the subject up)
Got mine just before she was expecting, but it wasnt a tough sell, anything after an Impreza Type-R is a far more comfortable ride for a passenger...and the 996 can get a rearward facing baby seat in the back (tried 2 models, they both pass the "shock" test)...Go for it, it's such a capable machine (can feel tame compared to hairier cars...TVR, etc, etc...but this is just it playing both roles very well)...just make sure you get the Porsche Sports Exhaust (PSE) on it, or fitted afterwards, it'll sound underwhelming otherwise.
I was in a similar position as just got married and kids are on the horizon reasonably soon. That was my reason for getting the RS. Had a few qualms parting with the largest amount of cash I've ever had piled up in my current account, but absolutely no regrets.
Just do it.
