I always thought that the Pie and Piston was the place for a good Whine on the net?

Fine wines you could do a lot worse than Lay and Wheeler

www.layandwheeler.co.uk

Local to me and *very* good is

www.thecellardoor.co.uk/

But I don't think you can actually *buy* on-line with them. You end up phoning it through.

If you're after mixed cases of "supermarket" wine then Virgin Wines have been OK.

Good for the non-enthusiast who just wants a case of decent stuff to glugg.

If you have specialist requirements let me know. I even buy wine over the net direct from New Zealand merchants and so on - great for getting hold of wines that are unobtainable over here.

Acceptable price - but you'd be far better off buying from a UK merchant due to the shipping costs. They will use Sea Shipping and spread the cost over hundreds of cases whereas if you get a case sent from them to you by air it ain't cheap.

But its the only way to obtain wines like Virtu.

I actually do know two or three merchants with Cloudy Bay allocations and buy a case every other year or year (depending) here in the UK.

Cloudy Bay make a truly great Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc but there a host of others making great versions too. "Stadte Landt" (sp?) I think. At the supermarket end Oyster Bay is nice (if not a patch on the fine Marlboroughs under discussion).

When I get home I'll post the main one I've been using's details up for you.

Like I say, though, its only worth it for wines that would otherwise be unobtainable. Any merchant importing in bulk should be offering a better price...

I've ordered from these people before now. They will ship world-wide and are based in NZ. Got some Virtu (twice). They do get Cloudy Bay, but like I say, you should really get that locally.

Got *great* service from them. Happy Customer - would recommend.
