Warranties, private or Porsche?

Okay, Hi everyone, new to the forums here. Want a used 996 C4 Coupe, terrified about engine going Pop. Official Porsche Dealers are expensive, and I can buy one cheaper at an Independant or even Private. Can I get a Porsche Warranty applied to a Private car as long as it has FPSH? If not are there any good independant Warranty companies out there. Sorry, for the boring topic, but I am in Japan and telephone calls are difficult with the time difference. Santa Claus has had his order for the last 15 years and it looks like he might be able to deliver one this Chrissie.......Coooor!

Yes, you can get an official Porsche warranty, you just have to take it along for an inspection.

Rough guide prices seem to be about £200 for the inspection, and £750 for the warranty (per annum).

Many thanks. I can now buy an inspected pivate car and haggle for a better deal. Get 3 years warrranty from porsche and sleep easily at night. Thanks for the help..........now wheres that 996 C4 Coupe..........

Make SURE that you get the car inspected. You CANNOT just buy the warranty becuase of a FPSH on the car.

It has to go to Porsche for an inpection (£200) and then they will have to fix EVERY problem they find at YOUR COST to THEIR SATISFACTION before they will issue the warranty (£725 per annum.)

Take my advice, pay top money to get a car from OPC with the warranty aready on it and save yourself heartbreak later.

Don't play with fire. You are clearly in a position to buy a 996, but not in a position to replace and engine (£7k) or gearbox (£8k) if it fails - i.e. same position as me.....

This year my privately-bought R reg 993C4S required nothing *at all* in its inspection to be fixed. Its history is a mixture of OPC and well-known specialist. Once I heard this I went ahead with the purchase. Because I was ready to get the car serviced at the OPC that did the inspection (subject to things being ok) and buy a Porsche warranty from them, they didn't even charge me for the inspection. I then simply haggled down the private price by the cost of the service and Porsche warranty. I asked a local OPC what they would have sold my car for and it was £4500 more than I paid. I haven't ended up with anything different.

In summary : don't fear buying privately if you do things properly...

I still think that you should get the inspection done BEFORE you buy the car.

Oh aye, I'm in agreement there - For me, I agreed that anything untoward/bad/unfixable in the inspection would result in no deal going forward. I'd still pick up the tab for the inspection of course, but that's to be expected. As it was, all was well and both buyer and seller breathed a sigh of relief and we got to work on the cash exchanging hands!
