tacho not working

is this pretty much always down to the 100amp fuse going or about to go? Only i cant understand it being cos the fuse is about to go, as surely if its still connecting the circuit it should all work? the speedo is a bit stuttery too at times? any suggestions? thanks!

The fuse starts to crack and so this I guess causes some issues in the quality of the current?

I would certainly change the fuse first, as 9 times out of 10, it'll be the problem.

Not yet, but may be doing so 2mro! It has a few issues as above, and a wet set of carpets. But other than that its not bad for the price!

I went through the fuse thing when I first got mine. The tacho wasn't working at all apart from the occasional flicker. When it did try and work it would get to about 3k then die. I ended up sending it back to Speedy Cables who replaced the board and since then it's been fine (apart from when the fuse really did go).

It's a Smiths gauge with TVR markings so Speedy (Caigauge) originally supplied them.

The speedo and tacho (mileometer) are run from the same eloctronic sensor somewhere 'underneath'the car somewhere someone more knowledgable than me can explain. These can get clogged up with dirt or sometimes need adjusting closer together. No idea how complicated this is to do though.

When the big fuse goes, or starts to crack, the Rev counter will initially become intermittent, then stop and then you have about half an our of power until the whole car stops. The fault then replicates a faulty alternator but simply cahnge the fuse and all is well.

This problem sounds like the sensor, not the big fuse.

Probably just the speedo.

Nothing to worry about ! - just a bit annoying. Do the following to make sure - if this doesn't work, get yourself a fuse quick !!!

The speedo will need to be looked at eventually (ie when you get time - a good time is when you go on holiday for a week somewhere), but in the mean time if you reset the trip meter to zero, then go for a drive so that you can drive at a steady 60-70mph. Keeping your eyes on the road, tap the speedo quite firmly all over the top half of the glass - the numbers will turn over and every thing will be ok - for how long, who knows, when it stops again repeat the procedure - as I said above, it can be looked at eventually.

the speedo worked but flickered now and again.....

As for the tacho, it was sat at about 7k and didnt move? so it wasnt intermittent. i think it went back to its stop when the ignition was off. Again, theyre not really things that will put me off too much, just wondering on what it may be as i can then possibly banter the price down for it!
I thought it may be a bad earth.

When you say Tacho do you mean the Rev counter or the Odometer (Mileometer)?

Thanks Marcus. Mine had stuck on the 56k change for the last few days (it did it at 55k as well) Took your advice and the mileometer and trip are working again. It sorted itself last time.

bit of a strange one! it sits at 7k when its first turned on, then if you flick the dial it drops round and works!lol! speedo seems fine tho after all, well it hit 140 today so maybe it doesnt relly work after all officer!
