Ohlins on Tuscan 2S
Discussion
I just came back from Aurok (www.aurok.com) who have fitted 2-way adjustable Ohlins to my Tuscan 2S. I can't believe that the factory doesn't fit these as standard or at least offers them as a factory fitted option. The handling is in a different league altogether! Increadibly sharp turn-in, silky smooth on highways and incredibly grippy on B-roads.
This is superb and the guys at Aurok, Ohlins main distributor in the UK, are very knowledgeable and really helpful.
I look forward to the next trackday: time to give some Porkers a run for their money!

Thats interesting to hear.
The suspension and handling on my Tusc was awful. I realise that the step up to the 'S' spec was supposed to make a difference, and aftermarket shocks are supposed to be the step above that.
It is interesting to hear that the suspension was improved on the '2' but Ohlins are even better than that!
I was looking into either Nitrons or Ohlins when I get another Tuscan in a few weeks. I know Ohlins do I think 3 setups in varying cost. Can I ask how much you paid?
Cheers.

i recently took my tuscan to get new shocks and rear springs fitted, prior to that if i hit a bump i was nearly driving on the wrong side of the road.i dont know what they fitted and never thought to ask but it cost me about 1k fitted, never the less it did the trick and drove like a totally different car.... b4 the engine popped last friday, ahhhhh.

The single adjustable Ohlins are quite superb as well and are about £400 cheaper than the doubles.
I'm afraid it's only the press cars that get this sort of treatment and a lot of the sports shocks work better than the original equipment, I've had Jon Waggitt up at SSCC having a play on a 2000 Tuscan recently and we seem to have had quite good results on the Gaz shocks as well.

I'm afraid it's true, all is correct and double ajustable as well, just to make the gulf to the standard fitment even bigger.
This is not speculation but fact and judging by Guglielmi's satisfaction with the Saggy on the day at Silverstone, somebody is setting them up correctly as well.

?!?
So you buy your new sagaris/Tuscan 2 on the basis that autocar /evo/ etc, rave about the cars handling.
(ie press cars fitted with ohlins/ and set up for the car)
THEN you DON'T get the same car as tested, with presumably cheaper less good dampers handling, - otherwise why do tvr bother to fit ohlins to their press cars - they are NOT EVEN A FACTORY option I believe...
Why aren't people more p*****D off, In my opinion, that is near fraudlulent behaviour, if true.
SURELY NOT, has anyone written to EVO about it and complained.

I think you'll find that the car Guigliemi drove at Silverstone did not have Ohlins - it really is that good as standard. If TVR went to so much trouble when they give a car to the press, why don't they make sure everything is glued together properly so it doesn't fall apart?? TVR don't systematically fit Ohlins to press cars but, to find out more (and before anybody writes to EVO)... calling Bosscerbera

I have heard this from a reliable source too. If the rumours are to be believed then press cars have been known to come with Ohlins and more powerful engines. It will be easier to check the former than the latter of course.
I would be very upset if I based a purchasing decision upon a drive in a press car only to find the spec is different. However, I expect most people base their decision upon their own experiences PLUS the opinions of the motoring journalists.
All I can tell you that in my own experience, the Nitrons I had fitted to my car plus several hours of careful setting up and cornerweightling dramatically improved the drive compared to how it left the factory. IMHO it would be a good thing for the factory to offer Nitrons/Ohlins as an extra cost upgrade option at the time of purchase on top of the standard spec. I think £2000 is OK when looking at cars that now cost £40-50K factory fresh.

Anyone who buys a car solely on what the mags say without test driving one for themselves is a moron. So it doesnt matter too much... also, you'll find alot of the mags tend to end up using customer cars (many off these forums) as its difficult to get them off manufacturers - and I think you'll find they are yet to comment on any startling differences, infact - certain customer cars have been prefered to the press cars (Cerbera for one, owned by a PH'er).
As for the power thing, thats being tested too, and so far the only press car evo have tested from TVR came in at *under* stated power, whereas many owners on here have had quite the reverse. Granted this may be a more recent development as some of the previous press cars have seemed a little monsterous (the yellow 4.5 TVR100 for one)-but even then a fair few of the mags have used owners cars for thier performance figures.
Im sure BossCerbera can shed light on the issue a little more...

The standard new cars DO handle well, So hard to tell if/how muvh more well the press cars are...
Would be interesting to see a comparison, BUT the quality of the components may not be as good, it is not unknown for a tuscs/tams dampers springs to be shot at 20k miles, whereas ohlins would last that much longer.
It is still a BIT cheeky though of TVR if true, seems to be... I wonder how much standard practice this is with other manucturers/press cars. Surely the mags must be wise to it, OR is it just expected to get A BETTER (optimised ) press car.

bjwoods,
trust me, the handling with the Ohlins is in a different league: the car bottomed out in Eau Rouge on the factory setup and is a lot more twitchy than on the Ohlins.
As far as press cars go I don't have a clue but would appeal to Smolensky to stop the practice if it's still going on. By the way, the factory setup on the SagAss is Bilstein and the shocks are more vertical than on the Tuscan. When I checked with Bilstein, they informed me that they wouldn't be able to help on the Tuscan: I guess that particular honeymoon was of the short-lived variety. I gather that some SagAsses have been converted to Ohlins.
