Just bought my G5 and finding it hard after the PC to get used to. A couple of quick questions...
When going back a pace in Explorer, it always goes back to the top of the page, rather than where I was. ( ie, in Ebay, it goes back to the top of the listings rather than where I was looking and I then have to scroll down and find where I had got to. ) Is there a setting to change?
Staying with Explorer, it doesn'r remember my log in details, even if I check the remember me box. Again, a setting?
Last q.
I bought this machine second hand and the guy has cleaned it out, but in the finder it still says N***K K*****s computer. How can I change this to me?
Cheers guys.

Firstly, if you're running OS X, ditch Internet Explorer. It's old, unmaintained, and doesn't work properly with some web sites. Use Safari instead, which doesn't do the annoying thing you're noticing. It also remembers things properly.

Secondly, you can rename the computer by going into System Preferences, going to the Sharing panel, and clicking the Edit button under the Computer Name text box.

If you mean the hard disk icon on the desktop, you can just rename that like any other file. A quick way to do it is to select the icon and press RETURN.

It sounds like you/he didn't totally clean it out - in other words, re-install the OS (Panther/Tiger?).

If I were you, I'd backup all of my things onto CD/DVD/external HD and do a complete reinstall. It's a very very easy process and will make sure that your computer is running in tip-top shape. All-in-all the process should take less than 45 mins so long as you don't have a huge amount of data (music/photo's) to transfer.

I'd definitely ditch Explorer in favour of Safari. Safari is much more up to date, and massively more user friendly. However, it does sometimes struggle with some Java based sites, and it's here where I usually switch over to Firefox (www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ )

You've bought a great computer, don't lose heart. Once everything 'clicks' you'll realise what an excellent decision it was to switch.

Ex PC now Mac user confirming it will definitely be worth getting used to in the long run. Easier OS and virtually no viruses. Click and drag everything everywhere - brilliant!

Quite honestly, I don't know. In Safari, it seems to be something to do with the way the page is constructed. Normally goes back to position, but occasionally to the top. There is no setting in Preferences.
I would reinforce adopting Safari (or perhaps Firefox), and keep Explorer and Firefox for emergencies. Tabbed browsing alone is worth it.

That sounds like a cookie or two is wrongly adjusted or rejected. Check under Preferences (any browser) for the rules for accepting cookies. You may have to delete all cookies for a site and start again.

First, I would recommend buying a copy of "The Missing Manual" for your flavour of OSX, by David Pogue. There's a lot of useful information, whatever level you are in boffin/numptiness. It took me a week to get my first OSX machine (also secondhand) sorted just right, and this was £20 very well spent. I would never have guessed where some of the tweaks were hidden.
One thing I would recommend is that you create a new Admin account for yourself (System Prefs/Accounts). This clears most of the former owner's "chaff" out, and in time you can delete their old account. N.B. do this before you start playing with browsers, then make sure IE under your new account has access to your favourites. When you open Safari for the first time, it may well import them automatically.
