During the last couple of years camera poles have been erected every few miles along this stretch of road. The cameras appear to be dome shaped and hang down from their support. Having just updated my satnav db I find that these are being identified as Specs. They don't look like Specs to me and cars are generally going quickly in the area.

Is this a new generation of camera or is my satnav db mistaken?

They have for some time been engaged in erection of Matrix information Boards for Dishforth south and just wonder if the so called cameras are CCTV to a Control some where.

Gemini should know.

In the meantime will get the spade out of the garage tomorrow.

Seen those during the long runs north, very scary, but if specs where's the IR Illuminator that they use?
Still worrying though. Needs a definite answer prior to Xmas break.

I've read it, but am still unsure.

At present, are these "dome cameras" capable of capturing data to issue speeding tickets?

Think they are cctv/ apnr cameras at present, but I'll bet folding money they can be modified to speed detection

On Friday (11th) a plain alloy camera on a pole had appeared on the A19 northbound, just south of the Crathorne/Yarm junction in Cleveland.

I don't know what (or who?) it was supposed to be doing.

Your query being fairly local to me and I could not answer so did some research and hereby lays a tale that no body seems to care any more...

Rang the number I had used for past 40 years to contact local Plod as I intended to ask Force Control for they patrol the area.

Number unobtainable.

Telephone Directory big page for Force with Telephone number.

Number unobtainable.

Rang Traffic Management Dept of County Council.

No interest as they are not responsible for A.1. Trunk Road and gave me a telephone number of firm at Darlington who were.

No reply to repeated calls.

Morning permambulation for paper called in at Plod shop. Good sign it was open.
Greeted by Front desk Civvy bedecked like a Plod and put you query to him and asked he give Force Control a bell to find out. No can do against Data Protection Act (I kid you not). Told him of my past 30 years and that he was surely joking. Very seriously started to mention Freedom of Insformation Act. At this steam coming from ears so not wishing to be lifted for disorderly conduct in a Police Station, left forthwith fuming. From what has been stated on here before appears in their training if in doubt quote the DPA/FoI????????

Onto the Internet and E Mail to Highways Agency at Leeds on 14th. No reply by early pm this date so sent another copy.

The clouds have broken. From one of my old shift the blue cameras on the blue poles are for monitoring traffic in relation to the Matrix Boards so that they can be activated if problem arises. Cameras in FCR.

The grey poles are Highway Agency (RMS (Darrington) Ltd) and following reply received late pm today:

"The cameras are used to periodically check the correct operation of the traffic monitoring equipment installed in the road. The cameras are used to count and classify the number of vehicles passing a counting station approximately every six months, and compare them against the numbers recorded by the traffic monitoring equipment. They are in pairs and round in shape, positioned at set intervals along the A1.

The traffic monitoring equipment is all part of the payment mechanism for the A1 Darrington to Dishforth DBFO [Design, Build, Finance and Operate] Project let by the Highways Agency to RMS. We use 2 cameras at each location, 1 to give a forward view of the approaching traffic and 1 to look down to check the length against markings on the road. This enables us to determine if the vehicles are greater or less than 6 metres in length; as used in our payment calculation."

I nominate DVD for the "beyond the call of duty" award.

Pat on the back! Must admit would have liked to have been a fly on the wall in a certain High Street building.

I second that. Good work DVD.

I think when presented with the "can't becasue of FoI / DPA", it is expedient to ask which section prevents them from doing so. This usually reveals the b*llsh*t for what it is.
