Brighton and Hove has become the country's parking ticket capital, with more fines issued per square mile than anywhere outside London.

A total of 100,733 tickets were issued in the city in nine months, worth more than £3 million to the city council.

On some days 500 tickets were issued, about one every two minutes.

Brighton has a parking scheme whereby you need to buy tokens beforehand, and scratch off the time you park on the front of them.

If you live in Brighton, it's quite simple, but if you're a visitor, then it must be a nightmare. You aren't allowed to park while you look for a shop selling the vouchers, so you are a bit stuffed.

On the other hand, I've never failed to find a space in the big multi storey car parks, that are about 100m from the beach and the shops.

Stockport introduced the same system just after I moved away about 6 years ago. Although I think they might have changed it to pay-and-display. I'm not sure as I always park in the multi-storey, or the 1 hour free, car parks whenever I visit now.

I am sure that Brighton have the same system of not having signs outside the shops that sell the vouchers either. So you can't even stop outside a shop and send your passenger in for a voucher 'cos you don't know which shop to stop at.
