The lunch break at our office is 1pm - 2pm. As I live 24 miles away going home for lunch is not really an option so I tend to sit at my desk eating and surfing PH. Problem is that most of the Directors work through their lunch as they have a vested interest being their company and all, but as I am sitting at my desk expect me to still sort things out during my break.

I am a good girl and don't surf when I am supposed to be working and don't have fag breaks as I don't smoke but how do I get the message over that I am at lunch. I even had one Director last week who said "I know you are at lunch but can you just......" I know it may seem petty to you boys but if I wanted to work through my lunch I would go back to a job with more money.

when the bosses try to take the p!ss during your lunch hour, all you need do is smile sweetly and point to a sign on your monitor that says:

I'm 51% Sweetheart, 49% Bitch...Don't Push Me.

Works for my missus, anyway

I used to put my phone on Busy and growl "I'm on lunch!" at anyone who dared venture near me.... But in the end I made a little - okay big! - DO NOT DISTURB notice that I used to put on my desk.

To be on the safe side, I made a point of helping out with very urgent queries but asked people to present non-urgent things later. I found helping out with the urgent stuff meant they didn't get ratty when I told them to clear off.

Don't know if any of this is of any help to you? But good luck anyway!

I tend to agree with Sgirl.

If you can help out and they are not taking the piss by doing it all the time then do so, why not ask if you can work through and leave early?

We are open-plan, and I stick the headphones on when I don't want to be disturbed. Doesn't matter whether you've got a CD in or not, people don't interrupt you and you can pretend you can't hear them if they speak to you. Works for if you want to concentrate on a piece of work too.

Mumble something about European working time directive and that should frighten them off.

I must admit, it's years since I had a lunch break in my work day. Same with tea breaks. I'm in early enough that I have to have breakfast at my desk too (don't really want to face it when I get up at 5:30).

It's not something I miss, though. I'm not quite in agreement with Gordon Gecko, but the idea above about working through and finishing earlier is a good one.

I guess the key thing is if you enjoy your work.

I don't particularly, and so I enjoy my lunch breaks etc. If I were to do something I actually enjoyed, well, then I'd probably work monster hours.
