Hi, could someone tell me where to look for the engine number on a 2002 996 Carrera 2? Pictures would be useful, and its not stated on the V5!!! Or is there an online resource I can cross reference the chassis number against to get the engine details?

I'm trying to help a friend out who's had some major engine problems, and not being a Porsche man myself, dont know where to start!

Thanks in advance

Regards
Iain

Get hold of back-order copy of "911 & Porsche World" from October 2004, they've got an extensive buyers guide for 996s, including the location of the engine number. You can order them online here: https://baden.ipl.co.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?nextform=/chp/backissues.html&mag=pwo

Don't really know the 996s, so can't really help on engine number location. However, The PET software (electronic parts catalogue) states that the part number for a replacement engine on an 02-03 996 should be 996 100 996 20. This is actually the engine from an 04 996 - the parts catalogue recommends it as replacement for an original 02-03 engine (original part number as above but with 14 instead of 20).

Not sure where you'll get one other than Porsche themselves. There should be some dead or very sick engines lying about at the dealers and independents, but a new short engine? As I understand it Porsche don't even try to repair them - just chuck them out and fit new ones.

Best of luck - shame no warranty cover....
