I do. I wish it would just feck off. People buy me stuff, but I wish they wouldn't. I tell them, but they do it anyway.
Not only that, but I can never think of what to buy everyone. Seems like if it's worth buying, they either already have it or I couldn't afford it. Similarly, if there's something I want, I'll buy it for myself. I'd rather not have daft trinkets just for the sake of having something.

I bet you wouldn't say that if you found a nice shiny lathe under the tree

I agree. It drives my family insane. They know that if they don't tell me what they want then they get socks & satsumas.

I give out lists of what I want usually a DVD or CD and ask people what they want that way no one ends up with a WHoCT.

Im actually thinking of buying my own presents this year and just getting the money off people.

That's my point. If I wanted one, I'd buy the one I wanted, not wait till someone got me the one they think I wanted. And I wouldn't want anyone spending that sort of money anyway...

OK, I give up and was on holiday when the horse thing was going on - someone let me in on the joke please.

Bah humbug etc

I love Christmas actually, a nice day spent with my family and just think of all the joy you can bring to your family by getting them a nice present, try and enter into the spirit of christmas a bit.

A regular contribitor to PH proposed the purchase of said WHoCT for a female friend...

Hilarity ensues...

The end :P

"WHoCT" searched for on google produces 4 PH threads on the first page. I was going to try and find the original thread for you but its been mentioned so often its a needle / haystack exercise!

I tell people I don't want anything and I don't buy anything. Except for my daughter.

It's that horrible Americanised message that keeps being thrust upon us about how Crimbo should be. Presents under the tree etc etc.

Nice to buy stuff for other people (if it's something they want, rather than the only thing you can think of they might want).

AFAIAC, Christmas is a good excuse to get a crowd over, and treat everyone to some good food and drink.

Why do people dread the day so much?

Same here. I usually buy what I want when I see it. SHMBO asks me what I would like and normally gets it. She got me a 24-120 VR lens for my birthday -£399 - which is what I wanted. She even said I could have a Nikon D200 for Christmas - £1399 body only - but I said I would wait till they were in the UK shops and handle one first. God know what I will get now - well apart from the 40 year old Glenffidich

Exactly

My family find me a nightmare to buy for, so I tell them not to bother (in a nice way).

Mrs Tree told me her Aunt is baking me a Cheesecake for Xmas.... WTF!!!
Ok , i like cheesecake, but all wrapped up, she's 'aving a girafe

WHoCT stand for Winged Horse of Chav Tat which was a slightly inapropriate present suggestion for a young lady

Over the years I have come to the conclusion that it is generally better not to exchange presents with a huge list of people. I make it a policy.

The wife and I exchange presents and recently I have come up with the ideal solution to chossing something.

I ask her what she wants. She tells me. I buy it. Job done. She's happy as I retain final selection of the item - but she, at least, gets something along the lines of what she wanted.

I tell her what I want. She gets me something else.

When I spend Christmas with members of the family we agree to exchange "token" presents on the day - for the fun of it. A maximum budget is set of £10 or £20 or something. So what you get is silly tat but it didn't cost enough to matter...

But that's worse! Why waste the bloody money? You may as well tell them to buy THEMSELVES something for a tenner... I bet they'd think longer and harder and find something useful.
