Just reading about the apollo gumbert which is possible the worst name for a car ever. and although not incredibly impressed with the car althou i liked the look!!!! my biggest thought was the engine. could the audi V8 be put into an ultima. would be an expensive option but 650 bhp and a modern engine. plus would be nice to have something to set your pride and joy apart from everyone elses

neat looking car http://jalopnik.com/cars/gumbert-apollo/index.php

I think any engine can be put in an ulitma with enough work.

Why not just put an ls1 turbo motor in there. Mine is bone stock ls1 out of a 98 vett with 5 psi made 418 rwhp and that's not even pushing the motor. With engine mount adaper plates the ls1 drops right in.

Matt,

You asked : "...could the audi V8 be put into an ultima. "

Yup my Ultima has just that - with twin turbos for the hilly bits !

Will try to post pics sometime....

To put the pictures in with the text just have a read at the section "Formatting Codes" when composing a post. It's pretty easy to figure out from there.

Dave,

Thanks for the info - now all I need to do is find somewhere to publish and link to - I seem to remember hearing about something called flikr or similar...

hopefully pic of Audi engine above...

p.s. doesn't seem to display the image without clicking (prob cos no jpg suffix which is a feature of clikr) - guess I'll have to invest in a hosting service......

If you right click the image on the flikr page and pick Copy Image Location (at least that's what it says in Firefox) you'll get a static image like this:

IT stuff aside...What a cool looking setup. That's a really short looking V8 especially to fit the turbos between it and bulkhead. Probably not a daft place to put them either there seems to be lots of dirt going up the way on my bulkhead as the air come up from under the car.

Is that a Getrag gearbox rather than a G50?

... I think you need to make sure there are no spaces between the "[pic]" and the link and the "[/pic}"

Jesus that is short - I've shortened my V12 and with it slightly recessed into the rear bulkhead I've still got my driveshafts 2" further back.

Dave,

The gearbox is also Audi but from an A6 diesel which (at the time) was the highest torque setup they did - not so now. I has been cryogenically treated (so I'm told) and probably the weakest link is the driveshafts.

What isn't visible are two intercoolers mounted horizontally at floor level between the block and the firewall. Two fans atop them draw air up into the space and hopefully vent turbo heat through ventilation holes in the canopy. The ally intake on top incorporates a water/air charge cooler. All the induction design/build as well as engine/ecu/stack wiring was done by Martin Taylor from sunny Halifax. I have his contact details if anyone is interested. His main interest is drag racing (1955 Beetle with 700 bhp at the last count) but I'm sure he be interested in other unusual turbo installations.....

Cheers,

Chris

p.s. engine should be good for 700 bhp - Vmax here we come !

p.p.s oops two replies - I thought the first one got lost so did it again doooh

It's from an Audi A6 diesel ! As I understand it that was the box with the highest torque rating in the Audi range. It's been cryogenically treated so I think the weakest link is the propshafts ...

That V8 is really short.

Very neat idea to put the intercoolers down there. Strikes me as being a lot nicer than having scoops to pull air in from the sides. Bit tough to do it with a Chevy though as they do seem a lot bigger...

Bet you can't wait to get it running!

Dave,

You bet - just received a wopping great Aeromotive fuel pump from Martin together with speed controller, filter and pressure regulator. Trouble is it has AN -10 inputs so he wants the tanks out to fit the same size outlets......

Next is engine out to change the oil filter location (remote) to allow easy plumbing for the Accusump and oil lines to the turbos.

More pictures as things move along.....

Cheers,

Chris
