Just in from work - can't spot a similar thread about it so here goes.

In the 'Manchester Evening News'

A proposal to strictly enforce the 70MPH speed limit because.............safety?(no)cash cow?(no)

Nope...to reduce CO2 levels

Gobsmacked - that's what I am.

They already operate this on the Autoroutes in France. In particular around Lyon area. The limit gets reduced from 130kph to 110kph to reduce emissions. Not everyone obeys it but they had speed cameras which flashed your reg number up just further along the road. Nice touch!

This exercise of slowing down cars a little bit on motorways to reduce C02 output is akin to farting into a hurricane hoping that it'll make a difference.

Just about sums it up.

And I will run the fecker down too

I will have you know, that driving four people into town in my car produces fewer emmissions on a per person basis than a double decker bus with full occupancy. But as most buses will only have a single car load of passengers on it, my car is by far more environmentally freindly. I reckon that as a bus costs about £120,000 and a good used Bentley is about £20,000 the bus companys should just buy two or three Turbo R's and put these on the bus route instead. They would be cheaper, burn less fuel and produce fewer emmissions too.

Although there has been cyclic weather conditions throughout history, the difference now is the level of hydrocarbons in the atmosphere.
I think most people would now agree that global warming is linked to pollution. . .

Yeah but it's all too little to late anyway, the cat's long since got out of the bag and run off, while we are still arguing if there was a cat in the first place.

No evidence -anywhere- that suggests this is having an effect.

amazing isnt it! humans have had this scientific know how for maybe 40 years - and all of a sudden we understand a planet that is a few billion years old. marvellous.

we are unable to predict next weeks weather with any reliability - yet we can predict and understand long term trends.

Can't see anything unnatural here but do point out something that may have been missed.

'They' reckon it's carbon dioxide rather than hydrocarbons, but one of the many problems with this is that the bulk of the half-a-degree warming over a hundred years that's getting everyone worried, happened before the bulk of the carbon dioxide emissions that are meant to have caused it.

One lovely bit of confusion in all this global wotnot is whether you're measuring surface temperatures, or the atmosphere which is where the greenhouse gases should be doing their warming. Trouble is, that cooling dip in the chart above, towards the end of the 20th century where the carbon dioxide emissions were supposedly very high and the atmospheric levels high too, is very real. Here it is in mroe detail.

Never mind speed limits, if all the cars on the face of the earth disappeared
overnight it would be very difficult indeed to detect any change in the atmospheric level of carbon dioxide if at all.

Best warming wisdom for a while came from a midlands council some months back where the local politicos, obviously not firing on a full set of synapses, passed a resolution to lower the carbon dioxide levels in the local air. D'oh. We also get Margaret Beckett saying countries must do everything they can to achieve a stable climate. I'd love to know how she plans to control the solar dynamo, the tilt of the earth's axis and its wobble, the eccentricity of earth's orbit, the cosmic ray flux, and then have time to manage volcanism and impacts from space.

When we have cretins like that in charge what hope is there.
