Anyone had a failed ECU Chip

Hello All,

Just wondering if anyone has had a failed ECU chip. I have borrowed an ecu from dave beer and it has a 5ltr chip in it and my car runs fine (Its a 4ltr HC) when i put my original 4ltr chip in it runs ok but when i put my foot down it seems to stall / not enough petrol...???

Could it be that this chip is shot...?

could be, or could be that the extra fuelling in teh 5 litre chip is masking another under-fuelling problem on your car like low fuel line pressure?

Mark Adams is the person to ask. But to me this sounds more like wrong chip rather than faulty chip? I seem to remember seeing checksum fault in the list of ECU fault codes so I guess the ECU does a checksum test at power up. No fault code would indicate that the chip was intact.

i have got an error of 44...left/near side lambda sensor out of range...i have got a new one on order so i shall see what difference that makes...only noticed it this morning when i went to overtake a 4x4...knocked it down a gear and put my foot down and it seemed to lose power but regained when i took my foot off...not a huge worry as it is running much better than in previous weeks!!!!!

There are two ways in which the chip (EPROM) could be faulty. One is where it has physically or electrically failed. The ECU may not be able to detect this (I don't know). If this was the problem I would expect the ECU to either not work at all or go into default, limp-home settings.

The other is where the chip itself works ok, but the bitmap stored on it is corrupt. I would expect this to cause the ECU to throw up a checksum error (code 29) and go into limp-home mode.

I'm no expert on the 14CUX and have no hands-on experience of diagnosing such a problem, but it's reasonable to expect it to behave as I've described.
