Book or film...

Had a discussion about this the other day, and while the classic Bram Stoker (book, not the FFC film with 'the most bodacious Jonathan Harker'!) was in front by a neck (if you'll pardon the pun! ), Anne Rice, SK's Salem's Lot and even Near Dark and Lost Boys (later obviously not taking it seriously!) were pretty popular. What do PHers reckon is the best vampire fiction of all time?

Top novel (later made into the film The Omega Man.

Also, his novel Hell House is pretty good, although no vampires!

Maybe not the best but From Dusk till Dawn, just to see Salma Hayek.

Couple of favourites of mine (film);

"Near Dark" (mid 80s) by Katherine Bigelow. Took a slightly more serious and practical look at being a modern vampire, plus Jesse was a total badass.

"Cronos" by Guillermo del Toro. Very different twist on vampirism involving two men struggling to retain the enigmatic Cronos device once they are under it's control.

And Hammer's "Twins Of Evil". Because it had naked twin girls and they showed it on telly and everyfink....

Just about anything NOT written by Anne Rice.

She's a rubbish author.

Read a book ages ago simply called 'The Vampire' - really excellent, and i'm sure a search on Google should find it.

Other than that, as you say, you cannot beat the classic Dracula

The Necroscope saga by Brian Lumley had me completely hooked through all 13 books Whilst the first one, IIRC is not specifically about Vampires, they start dominating the further through you get. In fact, I think I'm going to have to read them all again now!

Lifeforce! Haven't seen it for years but what can beat a naked female space vampire turning the population of London into zombies!

The filem is currently being re-made and should be closer to the book than "The Omega Man"
