A friend who is looking for a 996tt says that he has noticed a significant difference in price between Y-reg and 51-reg 996tt's when comparing virtually identicle cars. Even where mileage, condition, service history, colour etc, etc are almost the same and even if the Y-reg is an Aug-01 and the 51-reg is Sep-01 the 51-reg is always more expensive than the difference in age would justify.

I told him that 51-reg and later cars have the upgraded interior (Glove Box, Rain Sensitive Wipers, Auto Dimming Mirrors, anything else?) and this coupled with the 'new style' plate may be the reason.

Any other ideas?

I would say that the difference comes from people wanting one of the newer style reg plates on their car, they look newer that way and that appeals to the ego.

Porsche drivers with egos? Whatever next!!!!!????

Seriously though, if folk are THAT ego obsessed they'll most likely have a private plate anyway....

I think the biggest improvement is BOSE as standard - it is a far superior sound system.

there again most Y reg owners probably specced Bose, they just had to pay for it

probably the "facelift" tag and that illogical-but-true old style plate makes the car look older thing

again easily solved with a £250 DVLA plate

I think the rain sensitive wipers are a great addition to the newer cars - I don't think that I would have spec'd them if given the choice previously but now that I drive a car with them, I would. I also think the earlier cars look odd without a glovebox and with the little storage rack under the steering wheel for the owners manual instead.

I think dateless plates cost more than that. You only get crappy suffix/prefix ones for 250 quid and that looks "less expensive" than a Y plate.

You get nowt for that money. And no, I do not class Northern Irish plates as being dateless, even if they can be bought for that money. They are pikey in the extreme.

I class a dateless plate as being something like "JRS 135", you don't get these for 250 quid period, let alone 69 quid.

If you can't tell the age of a car from its plate then it is dateless, period.
Why are Irish plates "pikey".

We aren't going to agree on this issue. I think Irish plates like "DAZ 1453" are simply horribly pikey.

LMAO Daz. I couldn't remember if you had one.

My trouble with DAZ plates is that they aren't usually on 996 Turbo X50s, as in your case. Nope.....they are usually on a the Max Powered banger of the Toughest Chap On The Council Estate.

It's on the BMW so you wouldn't have seen it. The number is also little smaller than the example quoted above.

Also, you can disguise the car's age very easily without opting for a technically "dateless" plate.

A "dated" plate that is clearly older than the car sporting it focusses attention on the car itself rather than its age IMO.

I have a "pikey" N. Irish plate on my 911, not by choice, it came that way, and I quite like it. Can't see anything wrong personally. It doesn't spell any name or anything, but does look better than the D plate it would have come with.

IMO :-)
