Party pooping eh? I think the new licencing laws will prove an absolute disaster. Forget binge drinking, we will now have drunken idiots round the clock, fighting, criminal damage, drunk driving and general chaos. We don't have enough BiBs to Police effectively and we don't have any deterrent in the legal system. The message, loud and clear, is "Mr Scrote, fill your boots". We have just given up our towns and cities to criminals and scum.

The Government recognises this - the idiotic cow in charge of the scheme said yesterday:

"Sometimes you get what appears to be a perverse effect, which is that, by having a focus on a particular type of crime, more people as a result of the scale of the enforcement who might otherwise have got away with it get caught. Yes, you may see a rise in violent alcohol-related crime."

Roughly translated, yes there will be more crime but this is a trendy piece of lefty idealism, so who cares if we upset a few middle class types. We'll paper over the cracks by giving more onerous paperwork to our non-existant Police and tell everybody that it is in all their best interests.

Why do you want to be able to drink around the clock?

Couldn't agree more mon Ami! It's a relative minority of scrotes and poorly brought-up scum who are causing all the trouble.... I do NOT agree with 24 hour drinking...NO country in the EU has it and it cannot be good for the rest of us, the "normal" folks!
Anyone who "needs" a drink can get one anyhow!!!
Liberalise the licensing hours by all means, but make the licensed premises more responsible for the behavious of the scum who cause trouble (discos and clubs at throwing out time etc) and slam down HARD on the drunken yobs and yobesses causing trouble, not just a ticking off but a hefty fine or even better an orange-suited work community punishment, sweeping streets, washing away the spew, picking up the litter or similar....

For me, M.A.M, it will mean that I can continue to enjoy my evening in a drinking hole with friends and not be dictated to by somebody saying "You must stop drinking now and go home".

I do feel that your points are valid though, with regards to violence and crime. However, I will not be taking part in these activities.

It's gonna be hell when the laws come in, even worse than it is now. I tend to avoid certain nightclubs in my nearest town because they do drinks promotions like 2-for-1 all night and the place fills up with ugly slappers and chavs dripping in Elizabeth Duke. There's nowhere decent to go if you want to go out and have a decent night and get pissed AWAY from the chavs who don't know their drinking limits.

Chucking out time is a nightmare, even though our place operates staggered chucking out times. I wouldn't wanna clean the sick and piss up the following morning, and all you see in the taxi queues are tts who can't stand up.

Trouble is, it won't get rid of it. Instead of downing 10 pints in an hour, they'll have 15 pints over 2 or 3 hours, making the problem worse.

OK, so extend drinking hours in some choice establishments, I wouldn't have an argument with that. Why 24 hour drinking though?

The point is that for the vast majority of the 24 hour, you will be busy earning a living. So the people best able to exploit the new laws are people who do not work. These ought also to be people who can least afford to spend hours in pubs during the day. Who is subsidising their 24 hour drinking sprees? When are they looking for work>? What incentive do they have to find jobs when they can clearly afford to spend all day getting pissed?

I wonder what political party these people might tend to vote for...?

disagree as they wont all be on the streets at the same time and alcohol over a long time has a less lets go and beat them up effect than over a short time.

No, roughly translated it means that by focusing more on a particular crime, you will simply catch more of the people who are doing it than before. Not that more people will be doing it. That's not hard to understand.

I think most people simply want the option to drink when they want, without being restricted by 50-year old licensing laws designed to cut down on alcohol-related absenteeism in the post-war rebuilding, rather than to drink "around the clock".

True, but instead of there being trouble at 11, there will be trouble at 11, midnight, 1am, 2am, 3am etc..

Labour themselves have acknowledged that the new laws will result in greater levels of drunken crime. You might think that I'm some sort of swivel-eyed little Englander for having a problem with this, but I think this says more about you than me.

No, read it again. In typical incoherent nonsense-speak (had she been drinking I wonder?) the minister acknowledged gthat there will be an increase in violent crime but attempts to justify the law nonetheless. Labour moans about binge drinking and "anti-social behaviour" and then makes it easier for people to binge drink and engage in anti-social behaviour. It then seeks to "combat" this by giving more intrusive powers to over-worked, and increasingly non-existant Police, further infringing the rights and freedoms of average people.

Fine, who is stopping you? There are plenty of places in most towns and cities where you can drink on into the early hours. Why is it important to you to be able to drink at 9.00am?

They are for the most part the party of freedom and personal responsibility. However, there does seem to be an odd quirk within the "lower orders" of British culture which seems to demand drink = aggression. I have been to other EU countries where bars are open through the night and all you get is a pleasant atmosphere no matter how drunk the people.

All the BIB seem to do here, if 'fly on wall' "Street Crime" etc TV programmes are to be believed, is put he scum away for the night to sober up and let them go.

The Conservatives are the party of freedom and personal responsibility. Most people want the freedom not to have their lives blighted 24 hours a day by drunken idiots who have no understanding of personal responsibility and no respect for other people.

You can't generalise people like that.

Plenty of people who would be able to choose to drink in the day also have jobs. In case you hadn't noticed, the UK is quite diverse and not everbody has a 9-5 job.

There giros will of run out by 2!!

Not many pubs will not be open 24hrs, most will apply so every now and again they can stay open longer for sporting events etc.

It will be the supermarkets that will selling it 24hrs aday.

I'd quite like that too, but I don't think that such a situation can be achieved by dictat, indeed looking at the current situation it is blatently obvious that it cannot be achieved by dictat - plus my previous point still stands 'ban it and limit it' cannot stand next to 'freedom and personal responsibility' in my book.
On a less ideological note I actually think that after a very short period of time the new licensing regime will be found to have made sod all difference either for good or bad - all this hand wringing is purest Daily Mailism.

But pubs already open at 11.00am. Why is it important to force pubs to open before 11.00am?

I keep reading about the "pressure to get drunk before 11.00pm". What pressure? Who puts anybody under any pressure to get drunk at all? Why is it important to get drunk? Many people behave like idiots when they are drunk, even people who are normally lovely people. Extending drinking hours just creates more opportunity for people to behave badly. What we need is a more grown-up attitude towards drinking, that is what is different in all the European countries that have more liberal licencing laws.
