Thinking of buying a laptop as i've had enough of having to go into my office every time I want to log onto PH.

I'm going to keep my desktop however as this is ideal for doing things like video editing etc. so the laptop will just be used as a wifi tool to access the internet elsewhere around the house.

Based on this type of usage what spec should I be looking for on a second hand machine, and what brands have proven reliability in this area. Any advice would be gratefully received.

If you're just going to use the machine for wireless surfing of the Internet, then you won't need anything too speedy.
I would suggest spending £300 or so on a good quality reconditioned Compaq from one of the regular laptop sellers on E-bay.
We run 30+ Compaq laptops within our company, and other than user error they never give us any grief at all.
You can use a wireless USB stick to access your network (although some Compaq machines have wireless built in if you're lucky!!)
Specs wise, I'd look for something like a

P4 1.3ghz (or athlon / celeron equivalent)
512mb RAM
15" screen

Something like a Compaq NX800V or an N1020 would fit the bill perfectly.

Thinkpad X21

Loads on ebay for about £150

Its Kevlar and Titanium as well, which is cool AND pointless in equal measure...

You sure this spec. would do the job. Only P3 700MHz processor??

I've got an IBM ThinkPad T40, which I will be selling due to a recent upgrade. It's only been used for light surfing at home, as I have another computer for the work related stuff. Spec is P4m 1.5GHZ, 256MB, 40GB, 14.1" TFT, built in wireless etc. Mint condition, and the IBM warranty runs until the end of February next year.

PM me if you're interested, as it will save me the hassle of eBay'ing it. I was thinking £450ish, but will take £400 since eBay and PayPal won't be getting their cut!

Edited for typos

I've got one and its fab, not found anything that you would run on a laptop that doesnt run, if you see what I mean.

I bought a Toshiba R100 a couple of years back for just that. Skinny as hell, built in wireless, weighs just over a kilo even with the additional battery attached which gives it 7 hours of light use (3-4 with wireless active). eBay should turn up a few.

If that's really all you want Nokia have just released the 770 internet tablet.

I suspect 800 pixels wide would really annoy me unless it's got some sort of inteligent layout function, but I'v come accross this on ther forums and the general resonse from owners is that it's really cool.
