If Porsche didn’t exist – which car is next best ?

I wonder what you all would drive, specifically as a replacement for whatever Porsche you currently have. I’ve got a feeling the direction people go in, BMW, Ferrari, TVR etc will say a lot about what values draw them to Porsche in the first place.

I am not talking dream cars but replacements.

Interested in the pull factors of Porsche and getting a picture of their priority in peoples minds.

Bloody hard question - loved 911s since I was a kid, it's got heritage, I can get the kids in the back, it's everyday useable, it's totally reliable, it's great to drive every time I get in, I love the way it looks etc etc.

I think I'd have to forsake something from above. Possibly the heritage bit and go for a Monaro. Or the fun bit and go for an XK. Or the looks (and my cred) and go for a Scooby.

I have to say that I was recently thinking about a more practical car for me and ended up thinking of a 968!

You would probably have to buy two different types of car to replace the all round ability of a 911, unless you had a GT3 then probably the M400 Noble.

ICSD – completely agree. We’d have to sacrifice some aspect of the 911’s capabilities and for me it would be the rear seats that go

Incidentally I’d take a second hand 575 Maranello with the handling pack. Possibly the new Jag XK8 with a supercharger or the AM V8 if it is built better than the DB9 ?

I think I would need two cars as well. And if I've got the same money to spend as I did on the 997, it would be an old 550 Maranello (it might have to be LHD) and then something to take care of the 911's around town practicality. Like a Clio 182 or something. Great question by the way.

Edited to say just looked on autotrader and it doesn't have to be a LHD 550. Would still need an extra £2k a year to service it though...

Noble or very tricked up Exige =instead of GT3

I would have a nicer house! I drive a porsche because of my childhood passion which has grown as I have.

I like ferrari's, Astons and lambo's but feel like something is lacking from them, yes I would love to own one of each, but not at the expense of my Porsche.

If there was no Porsche then I would be happy with my VW Golf GT TDI.

or M3 CSL or Z4M coupe

or ideally RS3 if they make it, if its available in a 3 door and if it handles well (ie like the new RS4 not like other fast Audis)

This is my fourth Porsche now - have just come from a Ferrari that ended its life in a ball of flames. Have to say though that the Ferrari got under my skin in a way no other car has done - Porsche has always been my first love, but the Ferrari bug bit me hard, and I still miss it in a way that I have not experienced with any of my other cars. Only car I have just sat and looked at in my garage. If I felt comfortable with owning another one there is no doubt I would have it over another Porsche - but due to the way it almost killed me I just don't feel right getting into another. Which is a great shame. I know they aren't built as well, not as quick usually as the corresponding Porsche (althought the F430 might have addressed that), but there all that is forgotten as soon as you are sitting in the cockpit looking at the prancing horse on the steering wheel, turn the ignition and hear that magical sound coming from the engine bay behind you. A real event each and every time, pure emotion.

Yes, very difficult. Probably an Ultima or maybe an Exige. Still not complete or direct replacement though.
