911 SC what to look out for?

I am looking to buy a 911 for my wife, probably a 911 SC, I have seen quite a few between £8-£10K but am not sure what to look out for? I am aware of the obvious, heat exchangers, rust etc, but anything else I should look out for when buying one, your thoughts would be appreciated cheers. This is going to be a stepping stone to a newer 911, so look forward to posting more on this forum rather than just the TVR pages!

If you are looking to change to a newer 911 after just a year or so it may be worth going without for a couple more months, saving a few more pennies and getting a 3.2, preferably with G50 gearbox. The SC is a lovely old car but the 3.2 with G50 box just a bit easier to live with and there are decent ones out there from the late 80s for £12-£15K.

I`m not sure it even comes down to the model / gearbox. I just think the difference between a 10k and 13k car can be huge compared to the difference between say a 13 and 16k car.

I've been having similar thoughts, having sold the maserati I have a yearning for some old pork.

I had an 86 3.2 carrera and absolutely loved it, is the sc a huge step back?

What i'd ideally like is a black 3.2 supersport but with rear wing removed, is this a big no-no ?

Henry, you are of course right and it always come down to the condition (and, ideally, professional report) of a particular. I do think though that most people find the G50 'box cars a leap forward, but ain't it interesting to see how quickly we take a £8-£10K budget and make it £10-12K, then £13-16K!!!!!!!!!

Make sure your wife drives an SC first. They're not "that" easy to drive on a day to day basis if you're short of stature - the scuttle is quite high and there's no way you'd be able to see the extremities of the car.

As to what to look out for - how about everything, from rust to leaking oil pipes from broken cylinder head studs to clocked speedos, from worn synchros to ringers.

Thanks for all your comments, the temporary thing was mainly to get her used to driving a 911 really, due to her only being passed her test a few years! So if she has a few knocks in an SC its not that big a deal and of course its not as quick, then when we buy the 993 or 996 it will be much easier to drive and she will be used to it, thats what she wants anyway? She is 6ft tall so shouldnt be too big an issue and its not an everyday car, we have an Audi A8 (soon to be Merc CL) and a TVR also, so the TVR is my toy and the Porker will be hers?

Seems t be lots of issues, thought so, will try to get an independant report done?
