944 S2 petrol smell in boot ?

Hi to all,

Firstly I've just got me 944 S2 Cabrio, and i'm in heaven !!

I've now calmed down since my last post, about the boot seal, when it could be said I was in a hurry to get a reply. you know what it is when you've just got something.....................

Anyway, having sorted the seal, I've got a petrol smell in the boot which i cant seem to work out where its coming from, so any ideas would be welcome.

I'm also still in a state of shock to find out how well these things are put together, compared to the TVR I once had (same year 89)

Enormous alloy suspension parts front and rear ! nuts that come undone when you work on the car (which I do)and front and rear brakes the size to stop an express train, Amazing !!

CV on half shaft knackered, But no problems at all getting the shaft off, New CV's and back on in no time, great to work on.

I'll be on here more than often in the coming months and would be grateful for any help you can offer. thanks.

Right, I seem to have tracked the fuel smell to the wheel well at the back with a collection of rubber pipes inside the fuel filler area. My 944 book through to 89, does not cover the S2 (only in parts)

What does the plastic rectangular shaped tank do in the top of the wheel well.. is it just a breather box ?

Hi Ieuan,

This is a common problem on 924s/944 models (especially 1985.5 & later - but can effect earlier models too). Check the following...

[1] Fuel level sender gasket leaking (allowing fuel fumes to enter the cabin). Locate the fuel level sender and check the condition of the gasket around the sender cap

[2] Fuel tank ventilation system: The fuel tank has a ventilation system which is designed to prevent pressure buildup in the tank by removing fuel vapor. The system has hoses that run from the tank along the bottom of the vehicle on the right hand side, into the engine compartment, along the back of the bulkhead, to a charcoal filter canister in the left wing.

[3] Fuel Filler or Fuel Reservoir System Leak
There are a number of rubber hoses and rubber sleeves associated with the fuel filler and fuel reservoir system which can cause a fuel smell in the passenger's compartment if they develop holes or if their hose clamps come loose. The filler system and reservoir components are located in the rear hatch area behind the carpet on the fuel filler side of the car and behind the paneling on the inside of the roof pillar on that same side.

dont suppose you have a multi-CD changer in the boot? a "concours" 968 cab which appeared in PCGB Porsche Post last yr for 18 grand was being sold, i later found out, cos it stank of petrol especially after right hand corners. tunred out the chap who fixed the multichanger unit in the boot had accidentally drilled through the base plate of the boot and into the fuel tank. !!!!!

The hoses in the rear right behind the Carpet seem to be the cause. One of them is a very poor fit and porous. Its all sticky underneath it which suggests a hose failure.

Off to get new pipe in the morning, and then a test run with all the new parts as well.

I'll report back the findings.

Done it !!

Its the short hose that makes the smell, on the breather tank.

Replaced it with a new piece, and smell has gone !!!!

tomorrow will be out on the road at last !
