We’re having a strange problem today. We have an application running on an XP machine that needs to look at a share on a 2003 Server.

The share is fine and mapped correctly to the XP machine. The trouble is that although you can browse the mapped drive and everything seems OK on the XP PC the application is behaving like the drive is not mapped. Perhaps one out of 15 times it will work correctly.

Their appears to be no Network issues and as there are more than one XP machine and they are all behaving the same it points to the Server being the culprit.

Also the network drive on the XP machines stays connected to the 2003 server. At least there are no big red X saying it has lost its connection.

The link above may solve the problem.

It may be the server is timing out the connection because of lack of activity.

Yeah tried that one The drive is not disconecting though. Looks fine. I can click on it and browse. It's just the app that is behaving like the drive id not their. Although one out of say 12 times it works OK

Dont suppose you can configure the app to use UNC rather than a mapped drive?
Does the system event log show anything when the app tries to read or write on the PC or server ?

Just edited to add:

Get yourself a copy of filemon from: www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Filemon.html (its free).

and run it on the PC. That will tell you whats going on.

Surly if the mapped drives all seem to be OK and can be browsed by the client then it points to the application being the culprit. :?
