Well the way insurance works over there, anyione can drive your car as it is the car that is insured, not the driver specifically. It sucks a little if you use a car that is registered to a drunk driver!

assumed to be Guilty till you prove your innocence.............NO WAY

thats the problem nowadays People fall for it all too often, you have to be found Guilty in a Court of Law "Beyond reasonable doubt" to be actually Guilty of a Crime, how come people are so easy to Brainwash nowadays then?, can't they even be bothered to fight for their rights anymore?

Florida (the state of the senator in question) has an appalling DUI problem.

To give some idea of the scale of the problem, in Florida last year there were 1100 DUI related fatalities, against 550 in the UK (i could only find the 1997 figure which has been constant for several years).

The population of Florida is only 15m against the UK at 60m. Quite simply, DUI in Florida is a problem that is 8 times worse than the UK.

So maybe, pink plates aren't so bad after all if the message isn't getting through.

(The highest UK figure i can find is 1650 deaths in 1979)

I think Alistair Darling's heard about that...

He's looking into the feasibility of driving a wooden stake through your heart for 31mph....

For a short period......

Dont think its going to solve any problems but instead it might inflame them, imagine one of your family has just been hospitalised by a DD or even worse killed, whats going to happen when you see the next pink plate?
Especially in the U.S. where people carry guns, there's going to be a lot of bullet ridden drivers doors.

I think it’s a worthy intuitive but you should have to carry a sticker on the windscreen and rear window instead of number plate for a fixed period IMO.

Being a holiday destination how many of these drunk drivers were American.

I can imagine all the hire cars rolling around on pink plates

Hire cars in Fla have to be untagged now, they used to have specific plates, because so many tourists were being tailed and carjacked.
Florida is a prime example of Big money from low paid staff, all the Golf Courses, theme parks, real estate and shopping malls make mega bucks but there is big unemployment and low earning problems.

Disney starts at $10.50 per hour plus associated perks. Income is not a problem. Unemployment hovers around 3.7%. Unemployment is not a problem. The massive amount of retirees make up a large majority of the unemployed.

Salaries are a bit lower than places like California but that is because (1)There is no State or local income tax and (2)the cost of living is significantly lower.

The biggest problem with Florida's DUI programme is not the programme but getting a conviction in the first place. Political backroom deals, easy to beat laws (Police officers have to turn up to court on their day off) and first offender diversion programs. Florida does already have a breathalyzer device vehicle ignition interlock programme underway. In other words, for repeat offenders, you have to breathe into the tube before your car will start. There is also a programme that allows you to continue to drive your vehicle to/from work/school/grocery store. A lot of repeat offenders just keep a bag of non perishable groceries in the back seat.

Personally, as somebody living in Florida, I perceive a bigger danger on the roads from Mum's in SUVs with cell phones grafted to their ears and the ever present "Florida low speed in the fast lane blue hair".

Also, what's another reg plate to Florida?

Oh and one more thing...

The cars are, indeed, insured, but SO IS the individual. In other words, if you drive somebody else's car, your insurance will cover any unintended screw up. It also, 99% of the time, covers rentals.

Ernest M,

If those figures are correct then I stan dcorrected, wow that is low unemployment.
iirc does Florida not have a statistic along the lines that 1 in 3 black males have been in jail, I had always been under the impression that unemployment/poverty was a big factor in this, or maybe the unemployment figures are so low because an elite group in Florida hold board positions in about 15 different companies at a time?
