996 GT3 MK2 with an RS spoiler and front PU, road/track set up. Ok, it's not an RS but as a daily driver and occasional track day car it takes some beating. They are so cheap at the moment.... A lot of car for the money..

Maybe if I work a little harder.

What do you guys think?

Your friend Vince was at Silverstone last week, and said he was now after a GT3.

I think it's a good idea. I was thinking that a Mk2 GT3 would be a better bet as a road car than a 997, mainly because of the stronger more reliable engine. The only problem is the ride height. Perhaps lifting the car an inch would help? Or put that Ruf suspension on that allows you to lift the car for speed bumps.

I reckon a car in comfort spec would be better than one with buckets, no cage in the back so you can put bags in there. Obviously you would want climate, centre console, stereo and hands free......perfectly reasonable road car if you sort the ride height.

Surely a 996tt would make a better daily driver?

Prefer a GT3 to a Turbo any day, even for road.

Been thinking the same thing about GT3's being so cheap now that they could well be a good compromise for road and track and probably not lose too much more money.

By the way what is a PU?

Cheers for telling me I thought I was being left out of some special circle

I know of a GT3 that has done 9000miles in and around london this year and the owner has had no probs with using it everyday.

I use mine daily, including London traffic jams....really don't have any problems with it. It's ride height causes virtually no problems even on most traffic calming features. Only problem I've ever really had was coming out of a particular pub where there was sharp angle change between the pub entrance & main road. Ok they are not super smooth given the firm ride...but what the hell some compromises are worth it.

How much of a compromise?

I don't like cars that are to stiff and not compliant for daily use, how does it compare to a standard setup 996 in percentage terms. Thought the standard car was a bit to soft

Got a Cayman on order and if it’s not the dogs, its GT3 time.

Steve - go for it...

I use mine on the road a lot and I cope fine. Normal speed humps are fine (I now have a track setup on it) but be very careful with those stupid small square humps in the middle of the road as they are great for removing brake ducts if you try to straddle them as you would in a normal car!

A gt3 is much less compliant. It really depends upon what you are prepared to live with but its not a comfortable ride on bumpy B roads. With that said - I love mine and I won't be getting rid shortly...

10000 miles this year, half in London, no problem. What car do you have at the mo Steve? I'm thinking of the road/track set up and front brembos for next year, skew it a little more towards track.

AND i've suffering to make this car a bargain now!

I know your car, you tried to kill me at bedford when I instructed you in it..

Sam

I drive a GT3RS on occasion but its got a pretty extreme set up on it. I cant afford a MK2 right now but its the daily driver I would have no question. I'm pretty used to a very stiff set up. I drove Tim Chandler's 997S at Bedford last year, great car but too soft for me as a daily driver. I've driven lots of MK2s and with a good set up they are my ideal compromise between road and track. Great cars, under rated and under valued IMHO.

I would be more tempted by a GT2 for the road and occasional track day over a MK2 GT3 especially considering you have an RS there is not much difference in price and remember the stratospheric price when new it is by far the best super car bargain out there, put a driver in it with a set up and it would be lots of fun at Spa & Silverstone in the dry...

just got a mk1 gt3 , replaced a 993tt 430bhp ( in fact i could be old car of yours?!, email me if rings a bell ) love it, much
more fun, sounds amazing, no real stress on speed bumps only the same as my old M3 Evo Sport, amazing engine, so
much more real sound than 993 ( altough you cant beat the " clunck " on a 993 door closure! best made car in the world, actually
thinking about a 993 Cab too now to just spin around in) ......although early days cant ever see a day to sell the mk1, having
club sport flywheel done today and geom at JZ, Sports Exhaust and 100 cell cats already done, so it sounds the dogs....

all in all gt3 is the way, my best mates got a 997S, too soft, silly poncy dash, cup holder! and stupid clock !

Hi Steve

I remember that day and was also impressed at how well Tim's 997 went. Maybe to soft with PSAM, but the 997 is now available with sports suspension -20mm and a LSDiff. I'm trying to find a used one to have a test drive. If I like I will consider buying a used one for road and some track days.

I was at Goodwwod a few weeks ago and there was a PSAM 997 giving some well driven MK2 GT3's a hard time. I think the 997 is looking like being a good compromise as a one car solution - for me anyway.

Cheers Jonathan.

The MK2 GT3 and even the RS has a cup holder. Two infact!

Very useful for keepng your bottle of pop steady when trying to shave a few tenths at the Ring.
